The Cornell Raiders had no trouble getting back on the winning track a week ago when they hosted Serra Catholic in a WPIAL football game.

Staying on that winning track this week will be another matter altogether.

Cornell, which has built an overall record of 5-1 and is 2-1 in Class A Black Hills Conference play, will have its collective hands full when it travels to McDonald to take on powerful Fort Cherry at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 4.

Five other games involving West Hills high schools are set to kick off at 7 p.m. Friday. Moon hosts Peters Township, Montour entertains New Castle, Carlynton visits Waynesburg Central, Sto-Rox travels to battle Seton La Salle and Bishop Canevin goes on the road to play Serra Catholic.

In a noon Saturday kickoff, Our Lady of the Sacred Heart hosts South Park.

Cornell rebounded from a loss to Bishop Canevin Sept. 20 by pounding Serra Catholic, 38-6, last week. Walter Clarit got the Raiders off to a fast start by returning the opening kickoff 55 yards for a touchdown, and he added two more scores in the rout.

Cornell’s defense held Serra Catholic to only 78 total yards, but the Raiders figure to have a much tougher time of it when they meet Fort Cherry.

The Rangers, 3-0 in conference play and 6-0 overall, have outscored their opponents 240-34. They’ve registered three shutouts already, the most recent one coming in a 42-0 win over Burgettstown last week.

According to MaxPreps, quarterback Matt Sieg has been Fort Cherry’s offensive leader, scoring 12 touchdowns and rushing for more than 130 yards per game. So far in his career, Sieg has rushed for more than 5,000 yards and has thrown for more than 3,000 yards – and he’s only a junior.

In other games, Moon will look to rebound from last week’s gut-punch of a loss to Bethel Park when it hosts Peters Township (0-1, 5-1). The Tigers, 0-1 in Class 5A Allegheny Six Conference action and 3-2 overall, led 36-33 with just seconds remaining before giving up a short touchdown run and then an interception return for a score on the first play of the next possession.

Montour, 5-0 overall and 1-0 in Class 4A Parkway Conference action, saw its high-powered offense perform well in a 49-8 win over Blackhawk. Quarterback Trey Hopper threw for 296 yards and four touchdowns, with two of those scoring passes going to Daniel Batch.

The Spartans will face a New Castle team that has lost its only conference game but is 4-1 overall.

In Class 2A Century Conference play, Carlynton (0-2, 3-3) is coming off a 10-7 loss to Keystone Oaks. The Cougars will meet a Waynesburg Central team that is 1-1 in the conference and 3-3 overall.

In the same conference, Sto-Rox will go after that elusive first victory; the Vikings are 0-3 in the conference and 0-5 overall. They’ll have a rough test in Seton La Salle, which is 3-0 in the conference and 5-0 overall and is coming off a 55-0 throttling of Waynesburg Central last week.

The Rebels have averaged nearly 51 points per game over their past three wins. Sto-Rox, meanwhile, has yet to score more than 16 points in a game and last week lost 17-6 to Charleroi, which was winless coming into the game.

In a Class A Black Hills Conference matchup, Bishop Canevin – fresh off a 70-0 beat-down of Chartiers-Houston, will look to improve to 3-0 in conference play and 5-1 overall in its matchup with Serra Catholic (0-2, 1-5).

Quarterback Kole Olszewski triggered the Crusaders’ attack, throwing for 265 yards and four touchdowns – two of which went to Damar Olds, who caught six passes for 169 yards.

OLSH (2-1, 3-2) will host South Park, which brings a Class 2A Allegheny Conference record of 2-0 and an overall mark of 5-1 into Saturday’s noon matchup.

Vann Kavals was the man last week for the Chargers, as he threw for a pair of touchdowns, ran 36 yards for another score and picked up a loose OLSH fumble and sprinted 58 yards for his team’s final score.
