Two West Hills high school girls basketball teams had little in the way of competition in winning their season-opening games Monday night.
Bishop Canevin jumped to an 18-4 first-quarter lead and cruised to a 47-24 victory over Burgettstown, while Our Lady of the Sacred Heart had an even easier time in dispatching Eden Christian, 72-12.
Isabella Sysak scored 23 points to lead Bishop Canevin in its win. Kya Cooley contributed 14 points for the Crusaders.
Sysak scored 18 of her points in the first half and Cooley added nine of her 14 in the first two quarters as well. The two combined to hit five 3-pointers.
Bishop Canevin coach Rob Travis said his team played a sound defensive game and controlled the boards.
Vyla Tomachesky led the Crusaders’ defensive effort with five steals. Travis said freshman Elena Chadish provided solid minutes off the bench and buried her first varsity 3-pointer.
Savanna Rush scored 15 points to pace Burgettstown.
Claudia Ierullo tallied 16 points and Rowan Winter added 14 to spark OLSH in its one-sided win over Eden Christian.
Lola Garner contributed 10 points for the winners, who outscored Eden Christian 32-3 in the first quarter and led 46-10 at halftime.
OLSH coach Don Eckerle was pleased with his team’s effort.
“It was a good first game,” he said. “We shared the ball well and we had 11 different scorers.”
