High school swimming: Carlynton splits meets with Chartiers Valley, East Allegheny

The Carlynton boys and girls swim teams competed in their final section meet of the season Thursday, and both came up on short against Chartiers Valley.

The Cougars boys team fell 97-57 and the Carlynton girls team lost 95-53.

Two days earlier, Carlynton swept East Allegheny, with the girls winning 80-25 and the boys pulling out a 68-66 victory.

In Thursday’s meet against Chartiers Valley, Carlynton freshman Evey Fahnestock posted her sixth WPIAL qualifying time in the 100-yard backstroke, winning the event in 1 minute, 6.2 seconds.

Fahnestock also won the 50 freestyle while Cate Hites placed first in the 100 butterfly.

Fahnestock and Hites also took part in a pair of victorious relay efforts, teaming with Chloe Baum and Mallory Rose to win both the 400 freestyle and 200 individual medley events.

On the boys side, Harry Miller posted a pair of individual first-place finishes, winning the 200 and 500 freestyle events, and Graham Harman won the 100 free.

Miller and Harman also helped the Cougars to a first-place finish in the 400 free relay, teaming with Dominic Hixenbaugh and Dom Sans-Pelescak.

In the near-miss category, Carlynton’s 200 medley relay team of Graham, Hixenbaugh, Sans-Pelescak and Fionn Hites missed qualifying for the WPIAL meet by .96 seconds.

In Tuesday’s meet against East Allegheny, Harman and Hixenbaugh each notched a pair of individual victories and contributed to a pair of relay wins.

In the girls meet, Hites and Fahnestock matched their male counterparts, each swimming to a pair of individual first-place finishes and helping the Cougars to two relay victories.

Harman won the 100- and 200-yard freestyle events and also swam on victorious 400 freestyle relay and 200 medley relay units.

Hixenbaugh swam on the same relay squads and won the 200 individual medley and 100 backstroke.

Sans-Pelescak won the 50 free and also took part on the same relay wins while Fionn Hites placed first in the 500 free and swam on the 400 free relay team.

Miller also contributed to the 200 medley relay win.

On the girls side, Hites placed first in the 200 IM and 100 butterfly and helped the 400 free relay and 200 medley relay teams to victories.

Fahnestock won the 50 free and 100 breast and joined Hites on those winning relay units.

Baum won the 500 freestyle and took part in both winning relay efforts. Allie Glass won the 100 backstroke, Sarah Loney was first in the 200 free and Rose swam a leg on both the 400 free and 200 medley relay quartets.
