Leann Walzer scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the seventh inning as Our Lady of the Sacred Heart rallied from a 3-0 deficit to claim a 4-3 comeback victory over Ursuline Friday in a non-section softball game played at Pigeon Forge, Tenn.
The Chargers trailed 3-0 after three innings but got on the board in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI single by Olivia DiGiacomo.
OLSH then tied the score in the sixth when Mya Eshenbaugh tripled home Sophia Wasko, who opened the inning with a base hit, and Julia Pinter followed with a single that scored Eshenbaugh.
Walzer’s one-out single started the game-winning rally in the bottom of the seventh for OLSH. She moved to third when Ava Ciummo’s sacrifice bunt attempt was misplayed, putting runners at first and third.
Wasko popped out to short, leaving runners at the corners, and Eshenbaugh walked to load the bases, setting the stage for Walzer’s game-winning steal of home.
Camryn Hummel started the game for OLSH and gave up seven hits and three runs over seven innings, striking out four and walking three.
The Chargers played an error-free game and piled up 10 hits, with Walzer and Eshenbaugh each collecting two.
BASEBALL
Moon Area 7, Peters Township 6
The Tigers managed to score seven runs on just three hits and they held off a late rally by the Indians to claim a Class 5A Section 2 victory.
Moon took a 2-0 lead in the second inning on Jarrod Golden’s RBI triple and a fielder’s choice, but Peters Township scored single runs in the second and third to tie the game at 2-2.
Moon then scored five runs over the next three innings to build what looked to be a comfortable 7-2 lead, only to see the Indians score twice in the sixth and twice more in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Peters Township had the potential tying run at second with two outs in the seventh before Savario Vandetti induced a flyout to left for the game’s final out.
Max Thomas delivered a two-run single for Moon in the fourth inning and the Tigers added a single run in the fifth on a wild pitch. Moon scored twice more in the sixth on a bases-loaded walk and another wild pitch.
TRACK AND FIELD
Carlynton vs. Burgettstown/Washington
The Cougars opened their season Thursday night and the girls team came away with a pair of victories, overpowering Washington 123-12 and Burgettstown 102-33.
Carlynton’s boys team beat Washington 75-63 and fell to Burgettstown 70-66.
Henry Barbisch and Jordynn Carter both won three events to lead the Cougars. Barbisch took first in the discus with a throw of 117 feet, won the javelin with a toss of 126-9 and finished first in the shot put (43-3).
Carter won the 100-meter dash in 12.68 seconds, the 200 in 27.19 and the triple jump with a 36-7 effort.
Double winners in the boys meet were Ethan Moldovan, who won both the 1,600 meters (5:06.22) and the 3,200 (11:46.52), and Jermell Lindsey, who finished first in the 110 hurdles (17.43) and 300 hurdles (43.13).
In the girls meet, Lani Blevins won the 1,600 (5:59.84) and 3,200 (12:16.95), and Riley Mauro captured both the 100 hurdles (18.04) and 300 hurdles (52.06).
In the girls field events, Clare Ruffing won the high jump (4-8) and long jump (17-0.5) while Milad Majed won the discus (74-0) and shot put (30-3).
The Cougars boys also won the 4×400 relay and 4×800 relay while the girls took the 4×100 relay and 4×400 relay.
BOYS TENNIS
Carlynton 4, Keystone Oaks 1
The visiting Cougars swept the three singles matches in straight sets and split in the doubles competition to defeat the Eagles and pick up their first section win of the season earlier this week.
Posting singles wins for Carlynton were Max Klein (6-2, 6-1), Ian Robb (6-0, 6-1) and Leo Shorthouse (6-1, 6-2).
The Cougars’ first doubles team of Hayden Wertz and Dom Pelescak claimed a 7-6, 6-3 victory. No. 2 doubles Austin Gamble and Jimmy Kerns fell in a close match.
BOYS VOLLEYBALL
Pine-Richland 3, Moon Area 0
The Tigers lost to the Rams 25-14, 25-18, 25-18 Thursday night in the Class 3A Section 3 opener.
Billy Sprott led the Moon attack with nine kills, followed by Oliver Enos with eight. Libero Shane Johns, setter Logan Anderson Stewart, Hayden Dunn and Enos combined for 30 digs.
Canon-McMillan 3, Montour 0
The Big Macs posted a sweep of the Spartans Thursday night in a WPIAL match. No other details were available.
BOYS RUGBY
Moon Area 35, Central Catholic 0
The Tigers met with little resistance from the Vikings, opening up a 34-0 lead at halftime. Freshman Matthew Smarsh was selected as the player of the week by his teammates after breaking off several outstanding runs.
Moon will be back in action at 1 p.m. Sunday at home against Indiana.
