High school roundup: Moon girls remain unbeaten in golf; OLSH posts girls volleyball sweep

Liv DeGori shot a 1-over-par 37 to lead Moon Area to a 172-177 victory over Peters Township Tuesday in a WPIAL Class 3A Section 2 girls golf match at Valley Brook Country Club.

With the win, the Tigers improved to 8-0 overall on the season and 7-0 in section play.

DeGori’s round was highlighted by two birdie putts, including a 30-foot effort on the first hole.

Angelina Schild continued her steady play with a round of 41. Aubrey Marasco shot 43 and nearly recorded a hole-in-one on the par-3 No. 4 hole, with her shot stopping 4 inches from the cup. Hope Cordle finished with a 51 for the Tigers.

Ellie Benson paced Peters Township with a score of 37.


GIRLS TENNIS


Montour 5, Moon Area 0

The Spartans improved to 2-2 on the season by blanking the Tigers Tuesday. Montour owns victories over Moon and North Hills (3-2) and has lost to Pine-Richland (4-1) and North Allegheny (5-0).


GIRLS VOLLEYBALL


Our Lady of the Sacred Heart 3, Freedom Area 0

The Chargers made quick work of the host Bulldogs, winning by scores of 25-9, 25-11 and 25-11 in a Class 2A Section 1 match.

The victory leaves OLSH 2-1 overall going into Wednesday’s meeting with Avonworth.

The Chargers’ junior varsity squad fell 2-0 by scores of 25-22, 25-23.


Bishop Canevin 3, Beaver County Christian School 2

Samantha Bittner registered 13 kills, 12 digs and three aces as the Crusaders posted a reverse sweep on the road, winning by scores of 17-25, 24-26, 25-22, 25-19, 15-7.

Macie McClain contributed 10 kills while Olivia Maida finished with six kills, seven aces and 20 digs.

Also helping Bishop Canevin were Ava Washington, who had 28 assists, 22 digs and four aces; Taleah Carroll, who totaled five kills and three blocks; Anna Sawyer, who tallied 19 digs and two aces; and Lizzy Fuchs, who finished with 18 digs, four kills and three aces.


Brentwood 3, Cornell 0

The Spartans prevailed by scores of 25-12, 25-7 and 25-15. No individual statistics were available.


Trinity 3, Montour 2

The Spartans won the first set, then rallied to win the next two before falling 25-20 and 16-14 in the final two sets in falling to the Hillers in a Class 3A Section 1 matchup at Montour. No individual statistics were available.


South Fayette 3, Moon Area 1

Setter Elina Antoniades totaled 20 assists, six kills and two aces for the Tigers, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the Lions, who won by scores of 25-20, 17-25, 25-18 and 25-16 in a Class 3A Section 1 matchup.

Rightside hitter Jade Rodemoyer had six kills to go with four aces and libero Danica Bacu added 10 digs for Moon Area. Outside hitter Alicia DeCaria also chipped in with nine kills.

The Tigers take on Oakland Catholic at home Thursday and will host the Moon Invitational Tournament Saturday.


BOYS SOCCER


Central Catholic 2, Moon Area 1

Eric Haupt tallied the Tigers’ lone goal off an assist from Hayden Dunn in the first half but they couldn’t hold on and fell to the Vikings in a non-section matchup.

Moon led 1-0 at halftime, but after Central Catholic tied the score at 1-1, the Raiders scored what proved to be the game-winning goal with about 9 minutes to play in the match.

Moon fell to 2-3 overall and stands 2-0 in Class 3A Section 4 action. Central Catholic competes in Class 4A.


Carrick 2, Carlynton 0

The Cougars fell in their season-opener to the Raiders.

Carlynton is counting on a trio of returning players in senior midfielder Diego Tuapante, junior defender MJ Eitel and junior forward Yusuf Sahin to carry the load this season.

Coach Joey Feola also hopes to get solid play from freshman midfielder Ali Al Nasri.

The Cougars lost four standout performers from last season in Mateo Carrasco, Hamza Alezzo, Hayden Wertz and Connor Hart.
