High school roundup: OLSH’s Schollaert leads WPIAL 2A golf tourney after one round

Our Lady of the Sacred Heart senior Jonah Schollaert fired a 2-under-par 70 Monday to lead the field after the opening round of the WPIAL Class 2A golf championships, held at Hillcrest Country Club in Lower Burrell.

Schollaert holds a two-stroke lead over Luke Sikora, a sophomore at Greensburg Salem, going into the final round, which will take place Sept. 30 at Valleybrook Country Club in Canonsburg.

Tyler Jones of Ligonier Valley is third after shooting a 75, followed by Ian Stempfer of Riverview (76) and Alex Avi of Shady Side Academy (77).

Jamin Brock of Bishop Canevin is tied for 12th at 80. Matt Prince of OLSH also competed and tied for 69th.

The top 36 players, including ties, move on to next week’s final round.

Schollaert tied for fourth in last year’s WPIAL tournament and wound up second at the PIAA tournament, a year after finishing 11th as a sophomore.

In the Class 3A tournament, played at Willowbrook Country Club in Apollo, Chris Brown led the Moon Area contingent by shooting a 77, good for a tie for 28th place.

Brown will advance to the final round Sept. 29 at Butler Country Club.

Also competing for Moon Monday were Matthew Hoch, who shot 81 to tie for 64; Cooper Fazio, who shot 84 (t-80); and Ian Bonidie, who shot 85 (t-85).

Joel Altenhof of Montour shot 83 to tie for 76th and Michael Pigoni shot 84 to tie for 80th.


GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

Bishop Canevin 3, Greensburg Central Catholic 0

The Crusaders needed just three games to defeat the Centurions in a WPIAL nonsection match at Bishop Canevin.

The Crusaders won by game scores of 25-20, 25-16, 25-21 over the Centurions. The two schools both compete at the Class 1A level but are in different sections


BOYS SOCCER

Chartiers-Houston 5, Carlynton 1

The Cougars trailed 2-0 at halftime and couldn’t pull even during the final 40 minutes in a nonsection match played Monday at Carlynton.

M.J. Eitel scored the lone goal for Carlynton, which fell to 0-6-2 overall this season.


GIRLS SOCCER

Our Lady of the Sacred Heart 4, Mohawk 3

Olivia Taylor scored a pair of goals to spark the Chargers past the Warriors in a Class 1A Section 1 match.

Camryn Hummel and Natalie Turcios each contributed one goal for OLSH.
