High school basketball: Montour girls, Bishop Canevin boys win openers

The Montour Spartans got off to a hot start and never looked back in posting a season-opening victory over Knoch, 50-15, Friday night in the opening round of the Montour Tip-Off Tournament.

Montour outscored the Knights 15-0 in the first quarter and then used a 14-2 second-quarter advantage to build a 29-2 halftime lead.

The Spartans continued to pull away, building their lead to 43-7 at the end of three quarters.

Brooklyn Young scored 16 points for Montour to lead all scorers while Olivia Hawk’s four points were tops for Knoch.

Young knocked down four 3-pointers on the night for Montour.

The Spartans will return to action at 2:30 p.m. Saturday against Quaker Valley and its standout 6-foot-4 senior Mimi Thiero.


DEER LAKES TIP-OFF TOURNAMENT

Yough 60, Sto-Rox 33

The Cougars used a balanced attack and a big second quarter to take control en route to a win over the Vikings in the season opener for both teams.

Evelyn Gates scored 13 points while Carly Fitzgibbons and Daisy Miller each added 12 for Yough, which led 15-11 after one quarter but then erupted for 20 second-quarter points while holding Sto-Rox to 6.

Brooklyn Sykes scored 21 points to lead Sto-Rox and Daniella Reel contributed nine.


BOYS BASKETBALL

WEST MIFFLIN TOURNAMENT

Bishop Canevin 65, Elizabeth-Forward 55

Drew Allen Jr. led all scorers with 22 points to spark the Crusaders to a season-opening victory over the Warriors in the West Mifflin Tournament.

Bishop Canevin led 13-10 after one quarter, then doubled Elizabeth-Forward’s output in the second quarter, outscoring the Warriors 24-12 to take a 37-22 halftime lead.

Allen scored 12 of the Crusaders’ 24 second-quarter points and finished the first half with 16.

Elizabeth-Forward, led by Tyler Basic’s 18 points, closed the gap slight in the third quarter by scoring 18 points to the Crusaders’ 13, but Bishop Canevin maintained the lead and claimed the win.

Jackson Maddix added 16 points for the winners, who return to action Saturday against Belle Vernon in the same tournament.
