RMU basketball: Men top UW-Milwaukee, entertain UW-Green Bay Saturday; women visit Wright State

Fresh off a Horizon League victory over UW-Milwaukee Thursday night, the Robert Morris men’s basketball team will host a pivotal league matchup at 1 p.m. Saturday against the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay Phoenix.

The Colonials, in fourth place in the league with a 5-5 mark and 13-8 overall, will look to make it two straight over the Phoenix this season when the two teams meet at the UPMC Events Center in Moon Township.

RMU defeated UW-Green Bay 80-78 on Dec. 4 behind 18 points and nine rebounds from DeSean Goode.

Green Bay is in third place, 11-10 overall and 6-4 in Horizon League action and features Marcus Hill, who averages 13.5 points per game and is shooting close to 40% from 3-point range. CJ O’Hara also sports a 12.7 ppg average.

Robert Morris enters the game after an 88-76 win over the UW-Milwaukee Panthers at the UPMC Events Center on Thursday.  The win put RMU into the thick of the conference race.

Due to injuries, the Panthers were somewhat undermanned, and the Colonials took advantage of the opportunity by shooting 65% from the field in the first half.  Ryan Prather again led Robert Morris with his fourth consecutive game of 20 points or more, as he finished with a game-high 23 points and was a major factor in RMU’s 43-35 halftime lead.

The Colonials, who led for all but five minutes, began the second half in the same fashion and showed excellent passing with 22 assists and outrebounded Milwaukee 38-24.

The rebounding advantage provided the Colonials with 42 points in the paint, while the Colonials shot 58.5% from the field and 52.9% from 3-point range.  Goode scored 15 points and had eight rebounds, and Nikolaos Chitikoudis added 11 points and six rebounds.

The win sweeps the series with UW-Milwaukee, which is 8-13 overall and 4-6 in Horizon League action.

RMU women top Youngstown State, travel to Wright State

The Robert Morris women’s basketball team will travel to Fairburn, Ohio, to take on the Wright State Raiders at 5 p.m. Sunday in a Horizon League matchup.

The game will match the 13-6 Colonials against the 6-14 Raiders, who feature their leading scorer, Breezie Williams, averaging 12.6 points per game.  Wright State is on a three-game losing streak and holds a 2-7 conference record.

Robert Morris, continuing its climb toward the upper echelon of the Horizon League, won a 55-40 statement home game over Youngstown State Wednesday to improve to 13-6 overall and 6-4 in league play, good enough for a tie for third place.

After a low scoring first half by both teams, the Penguins took a 21-20 lead into the locker-room. The second half, though, was dominated by the Colonials on both sides of the ball.

Robert Morris outscored Youngstown State, 35-19, while shooting 55% from the field, and won the rebound battle 39-21. Youngstown State forced 22 turnovers, but scored only 6 points off the turnovers, due to RMU’s defensive efforts.

The Colonials held the Penguins to 40 points, which was an impressive feat considering that YSU averaged 67 points per game coming into the contest.

Eva Levingston led the Colonials with 13 points and 10 rebounds, Ava Leroux added 12 points and eight rebounds and Aislin Malcolm and Bailey Kuhns each pulled down nine rebounds.

Casey Santoro had a game-high 19 points for Youngstown State, which fell to 13-7 overall and 6-4 in the league.
