Coming off a draw over the weekend, the Pittsburgh Riverhounds will travel to Birmingham, Ala., to take on the Birmingham Legion FC at 5 p.m. Sunday, April 12.
The winless Legion are 0-2-2 for the season and sit in 10th place in the USL Eastern Division. Tyler Pasher leads the Legion with two goals. The Riverhounds are 2-1-2 after a 1-1 draw against the Indy Eleven on Saturday.
Pittsburgh played its first match against former star goalkeeper, Eric Dick, who helped lead the Hounds to the USL Championship last season. Dick, who was peppered with 14 Riverhounds’ shots, made several great stops that kept the Eleven in the game.
Indianapolis struck first at the 20-minute mark of the first half when Charles Ahl was called for handling the ball inside the Pittsburgh box. Though the call was controversial, a penalty kick was awarded to Indy’s Jack Blake, who beat Hounds’ goalkeeper Nico Campuzano with a shot up the middle for a 1-0 Eleven lead. Both Campuzano and Dick provided a showcase of goalkeeping and the 1-0 lead remained into the break.
The Riverhounds applied significant pressure in the second half, but Dick continued to be impenetrable. As time expired in regulation, Indianapolis continued to hold a 1-0 lead, but as the match moved to extra time, the Riverhounds made their final push.
Albert Dikwa unleashed an incredible shot deep in the Indy box, but Dick made yet another incredible save. At the 91-minute mark, Ahl’s shot was again thwarted by Dick, but the rebound fell in front of the net to Eliot Goldthorp, who beat the goalkeeper with a shot to the left corner to tie the game at 1-1.
That proved to be the final score, as neither team was able to find the net afterward.
The Riverhounds held the time of possession with 65% and outshot the Eleven 14-10. Indianapolis is 1-2-1and in eighth place in the USL Eastern Division, while the Riverhounds currently hold seventh place.
