High School roundup: Anker, Heinrich spark first-inning rally to lead Carlynton past Maplewood

Isaac Anker and Tyler Heinrich each had two run-scoring hits in a 10-run first inning to send Carlynton to a 17-2 victory over visiting Mapletown Friday in a WPIAL Class 2A Section 3 baseball game.

Anker led the Cougars’ 10-hit attack with three hits, including an RBI double and an RBI single in that first inning.

Heinrich had an RBI base hit and a two-run single in the same frame for Carlynton.

Anker finished with three hits and three RBIs while Graydon Harvey had two hits and two RBIs and Ashton Donlin scored twice, drove in a run and had two hits.

Dominic Ciabattoni scored three times and drove in a run for the Cougars. Ray Filipovitz also drove in two runs in the four-inning game. Heinrich, Harvey and Filipovitz combined to hold Mapletown to two hits and one earned run while striking out four and walking six.


Moon Area 7, Central Valley 6

Andrew Cross scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the seventh inning to give the Tigers a non-section win over the visiting Warriors.

Cross reached on an error to lead off the seventh and moved to second on a sacrifice. After two straight intentional walks, Cross scored on a wild pitch while Owen Amey was at the plate with one out.

Both teams scored five runs in the first inning and then managed just one run apiece until Moon broke the deadlock in the bottom of the seventh.

Savario Vandetti had two of Moon’s seven hits and scored a run while Nick Machusko had a hit and drove in a run. Ryan Joyce doubled home two runs in the first inning for the Tigers.

Matt Forkin and Jack Ambrozic combined to limit Central Valley to one run on two hits over the final five innings, with Ambrozic picking up the win.


Hopewell 4, Montour 3

A seventh-inning rally came up just short as the Spartans dropped a one-run decision to the Vikings in a non-section game at Burkett Field.

Trailing 4-2 entering the bottom of the seventh, Montour’s Caleb Armbruster reached on an error but was cut down trying to score on Matteo Weber’s triple. Zander Stern delivered a sacrifice fly to score Weber, and a hit batsman put a runner at first with two outs. But Tyler Puffer grounded out to end the threat and the game.

The Vikings used a single run in the first inning and three more in the fourth to build a 4-0 lead.

Hopewell’s Ben McDonald singled home a run in the first inning and his sacrifice fly started the scoring in the fourth inning. The Vikings used a pair of bases-loaded walks to add to their lead in the fourth.

Armbruster’s two-run double in the fourth inning trimmed the margin to 4-2.

Weber was the lone Spartan to finish with two hits.


SOFTBALL

Our Lady of the Sacred Heart 14, Carlynton 2

Sophia Wasko and Sydney Trippe each drove in three runs and the Chargers took advantage of 12 Cougars walks in posting a Class 2A Section 3 victory at Youthtowne.

OLSH picked up single runs in the first two innings and then took control with a five-run third inning and tacked on seven more runs in the fourth and final inning.

Leeann Walzer tripled and scored on a wild pitch in the first inning and the Chargers took advantage of an error to score a second-inning run. OLSH plated its five runs in the third inning on two wild pitches, a bases-loaded walk, a bases-loaded hit batsman and Wasko’s sacrifice fly.

Walzer finished with two hits, as did Camryn Hummel, and Walzer drove in two runs. Wasko also limited Carlynton to six hits and one earned run over five innings. Kaycie Chapman had two hits for the Cougars while Sarah Loney drove in a run.


West Allegheny 14, Montour 1

Madison Maritz had three hits and drove in four runs and Ava Benish had a hit and three RBIs to lead the Indians past the Spartans in a Class 5A Section 3 game at West Allegheny.

Winning pitcher Irena Santoro limited Montour to five hits and one run in the five-inning contest and also had two hits and drove in a run. Kate Cook added two hits and two RBIs for West Allegheny.

Alexa Richardson was the lone Montour player to finish with two hits as the Spartans were out-hit 13-5.


South Fayette 4, Moon Area 2

Cam Valentino’s fourth-inning sacrifice fly proved to be the difference as the Lions edged the Tigers in a Class 5A Section 3 contest at South Fayette.

South Fayette took a 2-0 lead in the first inning but Moon used single runs in the second and fourth innings to forge a 2-2 tie. That set the stage for Valentino’s game-winning sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fourth.

Katie DeMarco had three hits for Moon, which outhit South Fayette, 8-4. Brooklyn Hall had two hits, including an RBI triple in the fourth.

DeMarco went the distance on the mound, yielding four hits and four earned runs while striking out eight and walking three.


South Side 15, Cornell 0

The Rams blanked the Raiders in a Class 1A Section 1 contest. No further details were available.
