The Roxian Theatre is ready to rock under a new name, with new perks for concertgoers.
Through a naming rights partnership, the historic McKees Rocks venue will now be called The Roxian Theatre presented by Citizens.
Teaming up with Live Nation, Citizens will offer exclusive perks for Citizens Bank debit and credit card holders, including exclusive presale access, skip-the-line entry, refreshed areas for fans and a new Skybox/Lounge presented by Citizens.
According to Maggie Gessner, head of clubs for Live Nation, the partnership underscores a joint commitment to growing Pittsburgh’s reputation as a true destination for live entertainment.
The sponsorship of the Roxian comes on the heels of Citizens Live at the Wylie, the first-ever name-in-title partnership for Pittsburgh’s new 4,000-capacity venue, set to open in the Lower Hill District next year.
Mark Rendulic, Citizens Pittsburgh market president, said that with the Roxian and the Wylie, the bank is “furthering our investment in Pittsburgh’s cultural landscape while bringing communities together through the power of live entertainment.”
According to Citizens, the partnerships are part of the company’s commitment to Pittsburgh’s cultural scene and the bank’s desire to expand its role in shaping the future of live music in Pittsburgh’s historic neighborhood theaters and other cultural destinations, while helping drive regional economic vitality and fostering community pride.
“Citizens has had a long-standing relationship with Live Nation in Boston,” Rendulic said. “The Roxian Theatre Presented by Citizens marks the second expansion of our partnership with Live Nation outside of Boston, and the first opportunity for Citizens debit and credit card holder perks in the Pittsburgh market.”
The new ventures build on the bank’s existing support of the Andy Warhol Museum’s Warhol Academy and Sound Series, City of Pittsburgh Summer Concert Series, August Wilson Center’s Community Days and Kelly Strayhorn Theater.
The Roxian Theatreholds 1,400 people and has hosted hundreds of artists since it opened in 1929 as a vaudeville playhouse. It was a movie theater from 1931 to 1979, then became the Emerald Room banquet hall, complete with a stage, dance floor, two bars, offices and a balcony, from 1980 to 2003.
The building sat dormant after the ballroom closed. One of the McKees Rocks Community Development Corp.’s first projects when it formed in 2004 was the revitalization of the facility that led to its formal reopening in 2019 as a renovated concert and performance venue.
The Roxian’s newest partner, Citizens Financial Group, Inc., is one of the nation’s oldest and largest financial institutions. Headquartered in Providence, R.I., Citizens offers a broad range of retail and commercial banking products.
