Construction continues on two key West Hills area roadways

West Hills area motorists will have to contend with lane or ramp restrictions and closures on two key area roadways next week.

Pennsylvania Department of Transportation District 11 said an eastbound lane restriction on the McKees Rocks Bridge will occur Monday through Friday, Aug. 11-15, weather permitting.

In addition, PennDOT announced the closure of the northbound I-79 to westbound I-376 (Parkway West) ramp in Robinson Township Monday night through Wednesday morning, if the weather cooperates.

PennDOT District 11 said that flagging operations will occur in the eastbound direction on the McKees Rocks Bridge toward Route 65 as needed from 7 a.m. until 5 p.m. daily, Monday through Friday. Crews will conduct sealing and cleaning operations on one of the two eastbound lanes and sidewalk of the bridge. Westbound traffic will not be restricted.

Additionally, while work occurs, flaggers will guide all pedestrians on the eastbound sidewalk to utilize the westbound sidewalk.

The $38.6 million McKees Rocks Bridge preservation project extends between Route 51 (Island Avenue) and Route 65 (Ohio River Boulevard) and includes sidewalk replacement, sidewalk support steel repairs and full-depth concrete pavement reconstruction of the road and two ramps at Helen Street.

The overall project is anticipated to conclude in the fall.

In Robinson, the northbound I-79 to westbound I-376 (Exit 59B) ramp will close from 7 p.m. through 6 a.m. each night to allow crews to conduct joint cleaning and sealing of the ramp and shoulder.

Ramp traffic will be detoured as follows:

  • Continue straight on northbound I-79 past the closed ramp
  • Take the Route 60 Crafton/Moon Run (Exit 60) off-ramp
  • Turn left onto Route 60 (Steubenville Pike)
  • Take the ramp to I-79 South toward Washington
  • From southbound I-79, take the ramp to West 376 toward Pittsburgh International Airport/Beaver (Exit 59B)
  • End detour

The closures could be lifted earlier if the work is completed sooner.

In addition, shoulder restrictions will occur from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays through Friday, Aug. 15, to allow crews to conduct highway lighting work in the following locations:

  • Eastbound I-376 to I-79 (Exit 64A)
  • Westbound I-376 to I-79 (Exit 64A)
  • I-79 between the I-376 (Exit 59 A/B) and the Crafton/Moon Run (Exit 60) interchanges
  • Route 60 (Steubenville Pike) at the I-79 (Exit 60) interchange
  • Northbound I-79 off-ramp to Route 60 (Exit 60)

Work on this $14.97 million highway restoration project in Robinson and Kennedy townships began in April 2024. The project begins at the I-376 Airport/Pittsburgh (Exit 59 A/B) interchange and continues approximately one-half mile north of the Route 60 Moon Run/Crafton (Exit 60 A/B) interchange.

Work includes concrete pavement patching, guide rail and cable barrier replacement, highway lighting and signing updates, and other miscellaneous construction activities on mainline I-79 and 10 ramps — four at the I-376 interchange and six ramps at the Route 60 interchange.

Bridge preservation work will continue on six structures (northbound and southbound I-79 bridges over I-376, Route 60 and Campbells Run Road), including concrete deck overlays, replacement of seals at expansion dams and deck joints, substructure concrete repairs, cleaning of bridge bearings and spot painting of the northbound and southbound I-79 steel I-beam bridges over I-376.

Additionally, preservation work will be done on six existing sign structures (one on northbound I-79 and five on southbound I-79) as well as concrete repairs and scour protection of two arch culverts underneath mainline I-79 and several ramps.
