Demo eyed for Kennedy house destroyed by fire

During an April 15 public meeting, Kennedy commissioners made moves to tear down the remains of a building razed by fire in January 2020.

The commissioners approved a grant application to fund the demolition and passed a concurring resolution “to consider vacant and or dilapidated structure[s] in the township.”

The residential building on 39 Herbst Road has been vacant since the fire, according Mel Weinstein, treasurer and interim manager.

“It was not a good looking building before the fire — the fire just added to it,” Weinstein said.

Pension plan

Kennedy commissioners April 15 approved an ordinance permitting the township’s 14 non-police employees to choose whether they remain on the township’s pension plan or opt into the plan provided by the Laborers’ District Council of Western Pennsylvania union.

“For a younger person that would be better, for an older person, ours is better,” Weinstein said.

Vaccine clinic

Pittsburgh Mercy is hosting a COVID-19 vaccine clinic in McKees Rocks on April 30.

The free Moderna vaccine shots will be available from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Hays Manor Community Center, 205 Locust St. No insurance or appointment is needed to participate.
