Sometimes serendipity hits you when you need it most.
A few days ago I thought to myself I should probably write a story for Father’s Day but I was struggling for an idea. As fate, or serendipity, would have it, a friend of mine sent me a video of Stephen Wilson Jr. covering Ben E. King and the Drifters’ “Stand by Me.”
As I played the video, I thought it was a great version but right below that video was another of him singing “I’m a Song.” As I watched the video and listened to the lyrics, I was awestruck by its message. He had played this song for his dad to honor him at his funeral and it seems especially poignant to play on Father’s Day.

Like our fathers, songs and their lyrics mean something unique and different to everyone. That’s where their true power lies. Wilson’s lyrics tell a beautiful story his father being there for all of the moments, good and bad, in his son’s life. As you listen to this song, you can’t help but think about your own relationship you had with your father and what kind of song he’d sing.
If you are a father, hopefully you’re the kind of man your children want to emulate and even write a song about. As the darkness of this world surrounds your children, be the light that guides them on their own path. Enjoy this celebration of you as a father, a role model, as an example of how to live a life with beauty and purpose.
Hopefully, if your father is still with you, you have a great relationship and he still plays a vital role in your life. Embrace the moments and memories you have with him and don’t take these moments for granted. Enjoy each moment as best you can because one day you’re going to wake up and he’ll no longer be there. It’s at that moment where you’ll think about all the memories you shared and the lessons he taught you.
Ah, it’s those lessons we learned whether we wanted to or not.
You were my footprints in the sand.
You were the peace I felt when you held my hand.
You taught me how to be righteous and when needed, take a stand.
You taught me how to be humble and walk like a man.
You’re the one who taught me right from wrong. You taught me just about everything but you never taught me how to live without you.
As I make my way through this world, I’ll forever carry with me your song.
