A four-run second-inning rally proved to be the difference as Penn-Trafford posted a 5-3 victory over Moon Area Monday in the opening round of the WPIAL Class 3A softball tournament.
The Warriors entered the tournament as the No. 1 seed and Moon was seeded 16th among 16 teams.
But the Tigers gave Penn-Trafford all it could handle before the Warriors ultimately prevailed, knocking Moon out of the tournament and ending the Tigers’ season at 6-10-1.
Moon opened the scoring with a single run in the top of the first inning when Cameran Chambers doubled with two outs and Macy Trost singled home courtesy runner Delainey Lee.
Penn-Trafford struck for four runs in the bottom of the second, stringing together five straight singles with one out, and the Tigers could never get any closer than one run the rest of the way.
Ella Mains started the rally with a one-out single, and she advanced to third on Liz Welsh’s base hit. Mackenzie Cox laid down a bunt that went for a hit and drove home Mains to tie the score.
Rilie Moors’ single loaded the bases and Lorryn Sepe’s base hit drove in a pair of runs to make it 3-1.
The Warriors’ final run of the inning came home on an error.
Moon pulled to within a run in the third inning on RBI singles by Trost and Alina McMahon, making the score 4-3.
But Penn-Trafford got one of those runs back in the fourth on Cameron Ponko’s sacrifice fly.
Allysone Paulone limited Moon to five hits and one earned run over seven innings. She walked two and struck out three.
Moon pitcher Katie DeMarco surrendered 10 hits and four earned runs while walking two and striking out six in her six innings of work.
Trost was the lone Tigers hitter to finish with more than one hit.

GIRLS RUGBY
Downingtown 34, Moon Area 14
Moon Area saw its season come to an end Sunday with a loss to Downingtown in the state semifinals at Cumberland Valley High School.
The Tigers, who finished the season with a 9-2 record, got off to a slow start, giving up three tries in the first 15 minutes to fall behind 17-0.
Hannah Wasnieski.scored a try with Ellie Nurss converting to give Moon life, but a yellow card forced Moon to play down a player for the rest of the half.
After successfully killing off the penalty time, Moon scored on a big run by Ava Steed, and Nurss’ conversion brought the Tigers to within three points with 25 minutes to play in the game.
It appeared as though momentum had swung to Moon’s side and the Tigers began pressing the attack. But that created some gaps at the other end, and Downingtown took advantage to score three more times in the final minutes.
