High school lacrosse: Moon boys, girls lose close matches to Canon-McMillan; girls whip Latrobe

Both the Moon Area boys and girls lacrosse teams came out on the short end of close matches Saturday, with the boys falling to Canon-McMillan, 8-7, and the girls losing 10-8 to the Big Macs in non-section action.

The girls’ loss snapped a five-game winning streak and left the Tigers 8-2 overall and 7-0 in WPIAL Class 3A Section 2 action.

The previous evening, the Moon girls had extended their streak to five with a 17-2 thrashing of Greater Latrobe in a Section 2 game.

In that game, the Tigers scored three goals in each of the first two quarters to build a 6-1 lead at halftime, and after the break, Moon erupted for seven goals in the third quarter and added four more in the final quarter to win going away.

Attacker Avery Machusko paced the Tigers with a game-high five goals. Senior midfielder Gianna DeLuca scored a hat trick and Reese Keslar, Scarlet Eubanks and Vita Hazen each contributed two goals.

Defensively, Moon forced numerous turnovers that fueled its transition attack.

The goals were a bit harder to come by Saturday for the Moon girls. Canon-McMillan built a 5-3 lead at halftime, thanks to a 4-2 edge in the second quarter, and the Tigers could not pull even in the second half.

Keslar scored a pair of goals in the third quarter and the Tigers kept the pressure on in the fourth quarter but the Big Macs maintained their lead.

Keslar finished with four goals while Machusko added two and Eubanks and Kamryn White each contributed one.

In boys action, Moon held a slim 5-4 lead at halftime but Canon-McMillan gained the upper hand and built a one-goal lead down the stretch.

The Tigers had an opportunity in the final minutes when they enjoyed a man advantage, but the Big Macs goalkeeper made a foot-save with time expiring to preserve the win for his team.
Moon goalkeeper Dylan Cernetic played a solid game, as he made 22 saves on 30 shots on target.

Alec Batchelor led Moon with two goals while Cole Seymour, Ben Witenski, Tyler Zeigler, Ryder Zalin and Machi Baldis each added one.

Batchelor, Zeigler and Witenski each registered one assist for the Tigers, who are 4-4 overall.
