Moon Area’s Liv DeGori shot an 18-hole score of 81 Tuesday to tie for fourth place in the opening round of the WPIAL Class 3A girls golf championships, held at Seven Oaks Country Club in Beaver.
DeGori is tied with Pine-Richland’s Siena Smith heading into the final 18 holes of the tournament, which will take place Wednesday, Oct. 1, at Sewickley Heights Golf Club.
DeGori was one of three Tigers to compete Tuesday. Angelina Schild shot 92 to tie for 20th place with Alex Larocca of Mt. Lebanon, and Aubrey Marasco finished 35th with a score of 102.
All three Moon golfers will advance to the final round, as the top 36 finishers made the cut.
Katie Suess of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart competed in the Class 2A tournament, which took place at Seven Oaks Country Club in Beaver.
Suess finished 18th in the 18-player field with a score of 113 and did not make the cut.
Alyssa Zhang of Shady Side Academy posted a 1-over-par round of 73 and holds a six-shot lead over JoJo Jaskulski of Chartiers-Houston going into the final round Wednesday, Oct. 1, at Sewickley Heights Golf Club.
BOYS SOCCER
Montour 5, Blackhawk 0
The Spartans used goals from five different players to whip the Cougars in a Class 3A Section 4 match at Thomas J. Birko Memorial Stadium.
Dominic Passaro’s goal eight minutes into the game gave Montour a 1-0 lead and 24 minutes later, Tony Rodriguez scored to make it 2-0.
The score remained 2-0 until 18 minutes into the second half when Mitchell Braidic scored, and two minutes later, Dalton Young converted a penalty kick for the Spartans to increase the lead to 4-0.
Mario Passaro’s goal with 12 minutes remaining closed the scoring for Montour, which improved to 6-6 overall and 4-3 in conference play.
Our Lady of the Sacred Heart 3, Bethlehem-Center 2
Isaac Tarbuk snapped a 2-2 tie with a goal late in the first overtime to lift the Chargers past the Bulldogs in a nonsection match at Youthtowne.
The win extended OLSH’s unbeaten streak on the season to eight.
Brady Hernandez and Chad Minton each scored first-half goals for the Chargers to give them a 2-1 lead.
Moon Area 7, Baldwin 0
Eric Haupt and Hayden Dunn each contributed a pair of goals to lead the Tigers past the Highlanders in a Class 3A Section 4 match at Baldwin.
With the win, Moon improves to 8-3 overall and 7-0 in section play.
Vinnie Munizza, Laercio de Sousa and Eric Hildenbrand each added one goal for the Tigers.
Charlie Weiler and Evan Anderson each had two assists while Jocsan Castillo, de Sousa and Haupt each added one.
Will Guarino and Rocco Reilsono combined for the shutout in goal.
GIRLS TENNIS
Pine-Richland 5, Moon Area 0
First singles Haley Bates and the second doubles pair of Kritika Singh and Caroline Hall were the only Tigers to win a game in the loss to the Rams.
Also coming up short for Moon were singles players Cailyn Frye and Scarlet Eubanks and first doubles Ella Stephenson and Vita Hazen.
GIRLS VOLLEYBALL
Carlynton 3, Keystone Oaks 1
The Cougars took the first two games, then after losing the third, rebounded to take the fourth set and put away the Eagles in a Class 2A Section 2 contest at Carlynton.
The Cougars won the first two sets by scores of 25-12 and 25-17, erasing a 16-14 deficit in the second set by scoring 11 of the last 12 points.
Keystone Oaks rebounded to win the third set 25-18 but Carlynton answered by taking the fourth and deciding set, 25-12.
West Allegheny 3, Montour 2
The Indians outlasted the Spartans, 16-25, 25-22, 25-22, 20-25, 15-13, in a Class 3A Section 1 match at Montour.
Annet Christian led Montour with 16 kills while Sloane Cotton had 10 kills and three aces.
Zoe Woessner had 16 assists, Catherine Schmidt contributed 12 assists and six aces and Delaney Barto totaled 13 digs and one ace for the Spartans.
Trinity 3, Moon Area 0
The Hillers took three straight from the Tigers by set scores of 25-18, 25-21, 25-23 in a Class 3A Section 1 match at Moon.
Jules Corrado led Moon with six kills, two assists and 11 digs. Elina Antoniades had 11 kills, four aces, 13 assists and three blocks and Libero Danica Bacu registered 16 digs and four assists.
Seton LaSalle 3, Sto-Rox 0
The Rebels drilled the Vikings, 25-8, 25-7, 25-10, to win the Class 2A Section 2 matchup at Sto-Rox. No further details were available.
Rochester 3, Cornell 0
The Rams swept the Raiders by scores of 25-13, 25-11, 25-13 in a Class 1A Section 2 match at Rochester. No further details were available.
Hopewell 3, Our Lady of the Sacred Heart 1
The Vikings prevailed by set scores of 25-18, 25-19, 22-25, 25-23 in a Class 2A Section 1 contest.
Bella Coladonato led OLSH with 13 kills and seven digs while Lola Garner and Leah Parker each had 10 kills. Garner had 10 digs and Parker added eight. Carmella Rippole collected 32 assists and 13 digs and Sophia Wasko had 16 digs.
