High school roundup: Bishop Canevin, Moon Area claim boys soccer wins over West Hills rivals

Makhi Craig snapped a 1-1 tie with less than three minutes remaining in the match to propel Bishop Canevin to a 2-1 victory over Carlynton Thursday night in a WPIAL Class 1A Section 3 boys soccer match at Honus Wagner Stadium.

The Crusaders trailed 1-0 at halftime, as Ali Al Masri scored for Carlynton.

But Tyler Thamsarorat converted a penalty kick for Bishop Canevin with a little over 30 minutes to play in the game, tying the score at 1-1.

That set the stage for Craig’s game-winning goal, which came on a header off a long free kick with 2 minutes, 14 seconds remaining in the match.

The win gives Bishop Canevin a 2-1 record in section play and 2-3 overall.


Moon Area 2, Montour 1

Rhys Hollowood and Hayden Dunn each scored one goal as the Tigers edged the Spartans in a Class 3A Section 4 matchup at Montour.

Jocsan Castillo registered an assist for Moon, which improved to 4-3 overall and 4-0 in section play going into Saturday’s non-section match against South Park.

The two teams played through a scoreless first half before they traded goals in the second half, with Hollowood scoring five minutes into the half for Moon and Brayden Borris tying the score for Montour with 20 minutes remaining in the game.

Dunn then put home the game-winner with 15 minutes remaining for the Tigers.

Will Guarino had four saves for Moon while Liam Hovanic finished with seven saves in goal for Montour.


Our Lady of the Sacred Heart 8, Serra Catholic 0

Owen Minzer registered the hat trick with a trio of goals to lead the Chargers to a one-sided win over the Eagles in a Class 1A Section 3 matchup at Serra Catholic.

Minzer scored one of his goals in the first half, and Peter Zink added another to help OLSH build a 2-0 lead by halftime.

The Chargers then poured in six more goals in the second half, with Minzer scoring twice and Zink adding his second goal.

Also scoring for OLSH were Brady Hernandez, Andre Kolocouris and Colby Lane.


GIRLS SOCCER

Carlynton 4, Aquinas Academy 2

Mary Crawford scored a pair of goals and Bella D’Antonio put home what proved to be the game-winner as the Cougars defeated the Crusaders in a Class 1A Section 3 match.

Carlynton led 2-0 at halftime on goals by Crawford and Sophia O’Brien, but Aquinas tied the game with two straight goals, the second one coming on a long free kick with 11 minutes to play.

But the Cougars regained the lead when D’Antonio converted a 25-yard free kick to make it 3-2.

Carlynton sealed the win when Crawford scored a late goal off an assist from Gigi Choate.


BOYS GOLF

Montour 199, Blackhawk 220

Michael Pigoni and Drew Dess both shot 37s as the Spartans whipped the Cougars in a Class 3A Section 6 match at Chartiers Country Club.


Our Lady of the Sacred Heart 210, Burgettstown 236

Jonah Schollaert continued his stellar play by shooting a par-36 in a Class 2A Section 4 match at Moon Golf Club.

The Chargers improved to 9-2 in section play with the victory.

OLSH’s other scorers were Ryan DeNinno (42), Matthew Prince (43), Katie Suess (44) and Hunter Chimenti (46).


West Allegheny 199, Moon Area 203

Nico Ward led the Indians with a round of 36 to tie for medalist honors in a Class 3A Section 6 matchup at Montour Heights Country Club.

Moon’s Chris Brown also carded a 36, but the Tigers’ next-lowest score was posted by Ian Bonidie, who shot a 41. West Allegheny, meanwhile, had three other players besides Ward to shoot lower than a 41 – Ethan Boborski finished with a 38 while Levi Vaughan and Luke Dove each carded rounds of 40.

Matthew Koch, Eric Hartman and Patrick Queen all posted rounds of 42 for Moon.


GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

Montour 3, Moon 0

The Spartans needed just three sets to polish off the Tigers in a Class 3A Section 1 match at Montour, winning by scores of 25-10, 25-16 and 25-12.

Zoe Woessner totaled six aces and 17 assists for Montour while Sloane Cotten had 10 kills and Annet Christian added eight kills and 2.5 blocks. Other contributors for the Spartans included Cathrine Schmidt (two aces, seven assists), Ary Camardese (four kills, two blocks), Delaney Dzorenda and Lily Woessner (four kills, two blocks), Delaney Barto (12 digs, four aces) and Hailey Staub (16 digs, two aces).

Danica Bacu finished with eight digs and two assists for Moon while Elina Antoniades registered three kills, five aces and 11 assists.


Eden Christian 3, Bishop Canevin 0

The Warriors swept the Crusaders in this Class 1A Section 5 contest, winning by scores of 25-13, 25-12 and 25-14. No other details were reported.


Western Beaver 3, Cornell 0

The Golden Beavers downed the Raiders 25-10, 25-15 and 25-5 in a Class 1A Section 2 match. No other details were reported.


South Park 3, Sto-Rox 0

The Eagles blanked the Vikings, winning by scores of 25-9, 25-16 and 25-7 in a Class 2A Section 2 match. No other details were reported.


GIRLS TENNIS

Raven Karlik of Montour wound up third in the WPIAL Class 3A Section 2 singles tournament with a victory over Mia Kewtman of North Allegheny, 2-6, 6-3, 6-0, in Thursday’s consolation match.

Karlik will advance to play in next week’s WPIAL Class 3A singles tournament.
