Montour’s Raven Karlik nailed down a spot in next week’s WPIAL Class 3A girls singles tennis tournament by virtue of her performance in Wednesday’s Section 2 tournament, held at North Allegheny.
Karlik, seeded No. 5 in the tournament, opened with a victory over the No. 11 seed from Butler, then defeated the No. 4 seed from Mars in the quarterfinals before falling to the tournament’s top seed, from North Hills, in the semifinals.
Karlik will play again Thursday in the consolation match but already has locked up a spot in next week’s WPIAL tournament.
Montour’s Lauren Cox, seeded seventh, won her first match Wednesday but lost in the quarterfinals to the No. 2 seed from North Allegheny.
GIRLS SOCCER
Moon Area 6, Trinity 0
Kendall Dydek accounted for half of the Tigers’ goals, which led the way to a Class 3A Section 2 victory over the Hillers.
Emma Marquis contributed a pair of goals and Anna Palm added a goal and an assist for Moon, which improved to 6-1-0 overall and 5-0-0 in section play.
Riley LaFayette and Hailey Hatton each assisted on two of the Tigers’ goals while Bella Taylor added one.
Goalkeepers Ainslie Romasco and Samatha D’Alesio combined for the shutout.
Montour 3, West Allegheny 0
Irelynn Hobbs scored a pair of goals as the Spartans blanked the Indians in a Class 3A Section 2 match at Montour.
Brooklyn Young added one goal for Montour, which led 2-0 at halftime.
Brynn Kazcmarek, Kaci Mitcheltree and Kira Hobbs each contributed an assist in the win.

Olivia Taylor scored the only goal of the match for the Chargers in this Class 1A Section 1 battle.

Cooper Swarrow shot a 1-over-par 37, including a hole-in-one on No. 2, to spark the Buccaneers past the Chargers in a Class 2A Section 4 match at Washington Country Club.

The Chargers went on the road and downed the Flames in three straight sets, 25-16, 25-15 and 25-11 in a Class 2A Section 1 match. No individual statistics were reported.

The Cougars pulled off a clean sweep of the Vikings, winning by scores of 25-9, 25-12 and 25-14 in a Class 2A Section 2 matchup at Sto-Rox. No individual statistics were reported.
