FOOTBALL

Seton La Salle 22, Bishop Canevin 7

Kymarr Freeman scored on runs of 3 and 1 yard in the second half and the Rebels controlled the clock for much of the final two quarters en route to a win over the Crusaders Saturday night.

Bishop Canevin, which fell to 0-2, got on the board first in the opening quarter when Brady Wagner connected on an 80-yard touchdown pass to Damar Olds. Leo Shorthouse’s PAT kick gave the Crusaders a 7-0 victory.

But that would be the last time Bishop Canevin reached the end zone Saturday. Kia Jones’ 3-yard touchdown run in the second quarter, followed by Jeremy Rose’s PAT, tied the score at 7-7, and that’s the way the first half ended.

Seton La Salle used its defense to take the lead for keeps in the third quarter, as the Rebels earned a 2-point safety when a Bishop Canevin running back was tackled in the end zone.

Freeman’s 3-yard scoring run in the third quarter extended the Rebels’ lead to 15-7, and Freeman’s 1-yard TD run in the final quarter finished the scoring.

Seton LaSalle maintained possession for more than 20 minutes of play in the second half.

Olds caught six passes on the night for 165 yards for Bishop Canevin.

California 36, Cornell 32

Brandon Meier rushed for a pair of touchdowns, including one in the fourth quarter that proved to be the difference in the Trojans’ win over the Raiders Friday night.

Malachi Peak rushed for 147 yards and scored on a 13-yard run for the winners, who trailed 26-20 at halftime and 32-28 heading into the final quarter.

M.J. Stuckey threw for 164 yards and pair of touchdowns for Cornell, with both going to Desean Johnson, but Stuckey also threw two interceptions.

Khylil Johnson displayed his do-it-all skills once again, throwing for two touchdowns, catching a pair of scoring passes and rushing for 57 yards for the Raiders.

Terrance Collington caught a pair of touchdown passes – including one from Johnson – and finished with 96 receiving yards and 24 yards on the ground.
