High school roundup: Moon Area girls edge Montour in soccer; OLSH girls take cross country crown

Riley LaFayette scored on a free kick with 6 minutes to go in the game Wednesday, and that proved to be the difference as Moon Area squeezed past Montour, 2-1, in a WPIAL Class 3A Section 2 girls soccer showdown at Thomas J. Birko Stadium.

Kendall Dydek, who assisted on LaFayette’s game-winning goal, opened the scoring for Moon when she put one past the goalkeeper 20 minutes into the opening half.

Junie Shaver assisted on Dydek’s goal.

Montour tied the game with 15 minutes left in the opening half when Irelynn Hobbs scored on a penalty kick.

The game remained deadlocked until LaFayette’s goal.

Moon improved to 7-1-0 overall and 6-0 in section play with the win. Montour dropped to 6-2 overall and 5-1 in Section 2 action.


CROSS COUNTRY

Class 2A Section 2

Our Lady of the Sacred Heart’s girls team, buoyed by three top-10 finishers, captured the section title Tuesday at Youthtowne.

Jules Goshen wound up second overall in 20 minutes, 6 seconds, Eva Crofford wound up fourth in 20:43 and Hannah Hayes finished seventh with a time of 21:03.

Also competing for the OLSH girls were Mira Mosca, who placed 11th in 22:16, and Charlotte Gaunter, who was 14th overall in 22:30.

On the boys side, Brayden Douglass helped the Chargers finish fourth by placing eighth with a time of 17:31. Wes Goshen was 15th in 18:19, followed by Leo Mosca (20th, 18:41), Oliver Tomsic (31st, 19:33) and Sidney McLaughlin (41st, 20:36).


BOYS SOCCER

Moon Area 2, Chartiers Valley 1 (2 OT)

Eric Haupt scored the game-winning goal with 1 minute, 24 seconds left in the second overtime as the Tigers edged the Colts in a Class 3A Section 4 game played Tuesday night.

Haupt accounted for both goals for Moon, which improved to 6-3 overall and 5-0 in section play.

Hayden Dunn assisted on one of Haupt’s goals and Evan Anderson picked up the other assist.


GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

Brentwood 3, Bishop Canevin 2

The Spartans outlasted the Crusaders in a seesaw Class 1A Section 5 match Tuesday night that went to five sets, with Brentwood winning by scores of 18-25, 25-17, 25-22, 16-25 and 15-9. No individual statistics were available.


Chartiers Valley 3, Moon Area 2

The Colts proved victorious in a match that went the distance, winning 22-25, 25-23, 25-17, 24-26, 22-20 in Class 3A Section 1 action Tuesday night.

Elina Antoniades piled up 16 assists, 10 kills, six aces, four digs and 12 blocks for Moon. Libero Danica Bacu contributed 14 digs, two aces and three assists while Abbie Warnagiris added four kills, five aces and nine blocks.

Also for Moon, Alicia DeCaria had six kills, Reese Kessler nine kills and Jules Corrado and Jade Rodemoyer each had four kills.


South Side 3, Cornell 0

The Rams swept the Raiders, 25-10, 25-17, 25-16 in a Class 1A Section 2 game at South Side Beaver Tuesday night. No individual statistics were available.


BOYS GOLF

Avonworth 195, Our Lady of the Sacred Heart 228

Charlie Igims shot a 1-under-par 34 to lead the Antelopes past the Chargers in a Class 2A Section 4 match at Shannopin Country Club.


GIRLS TENNIS

WPIAL Singles Championships

Montour’s Raven Karlik’s run in the Class 3A tournament was short-lived, as she lost 10-1 to Brianna Kuczinski of Upper St. Clair in an opening-round match Wednesday at Bethel Park High School.

Karlik was seeded 12th in the 16-player field while Kuczinski was seeded ninth. Kuczinski won her quarterfinal match before falling to top seed Meriwether McCargo in the semifinals.
