High school roundup: Moon Area’s DeGori qualifies for PIAA Class 3A golf tournament

Moon Area’s Liv DeGori earned a spot in the PIAA girls golf tournament by finishing fifth in the WPIAL Class 3A girls individual golf championship, which concluded Wednesday at Sewickley Heights Golf Club.

DeGori finished at 21-over-par for the 36-hole event after shooting 12-over-par 84 Wednesday.

She was tied for fourth after her opening-round score of 81.

The top seven finishers Wednesday earned berths in the state tournament, which will take place Oct. 20-21 at the Penn State Golf Course’s Blue course.

Teammate Angelina Schild wound up 10th after shooting a 7-over-par 79 Wednesday. That was tied for the third-best round of the day.

Moon’s Aubrey Marasco finished 25th with her round of 86 Wednesday, a 16-stroke improvement over her opening-round score of 102.

In the Class 2A event, which also concluded Wednesday at Sewickley Heights, Katie Suess of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart finished 18th among 18 golfers with a two-round total of 219. She shot 106 Wednesday. Only the top nine finishers will move on to the state tournament.


GIRLS TENNIS

WPIAL Doubles Tournament

Montour’s doubles tandem of Raven Karlik and Lauren Cox were eliminated in the first round of the Class 3A tournament Wednesday at North Allegheny High School.

Karlik and Cox, seeded No. 15 in the 16-team field, fell to No. 2 seed Brooke Henderson and Alexandra Merkel of Shady Side Academy, 10-0.


GIRLS SOCCER

Our Lady of the Sacred Heart 6, South Side 0

Olivia Taylor scored a pair of goals to help stake the Chargers to a 5-0 halftime lead, and they went on to defeat the Rams in a Class 1A Section 1 matchup.

Camryn Hummel, Lizzy Day and Natalie Turcios also scored first-half goals for OLSH, which improved to 5-5-1 overall and 5-3-1 in section play.

Maddy Hayes scored the lone second-half goal for the Chargers.


Montour 7, Bethel Park 0

Irelynn Hobbs scored four goals, including three in the first half that gave the Spartans a 3-0 lead at intermission on the way to a Class 3A Section 2 victory over the Black Hawks.

Brooklyn Young, Kenzie Hall and Holly Zulka each scored once for Montour, which improved to 9-2 overall and 8-1 in the section.


Moon Area 1, West Allegheny 0

Taylor McConnell snapped a scoreless tie 15 minutes into the second half to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead, and they held on to defeat the Indians in a Class 3A Section 2 match at Moon.

Kendall Dydek assisted on the lone goal for Moon, which improved to 12-1-0 overall and 10-0-0 in section play.

Ainslie Romasco earned the shutout in goal for the Tigers.


Carlynton 5, Bishop Canevin 0

The Cougars led 2-0 at halftime on goals by Riley Mauro and then added three more goals in the final 40 minutes to pull away from the Crusaders in a Class 1A Section 3 match.

Bella D’Antonio also scored a pair of goals for Carlynton, which improved to 7-4-1 overall and 6-2-0 in section play, while Sophia O’Brien had one.


BOYS SOCCER

Montour 5, Ambridge 2

Aaron Scheib gave the Bridgers a 1-0 lead three minutes into the game, but a pair of goals by Brayden Borris, both off assists from Tyler Fritzius, later in the half gave the Spartans a 2-0 lead at halftime, and they went on to claim the Class 3A Section 4 win.

Borris added his third goal of the game 13 minutes into the second half and Dom Passaro tallied the Spartans’ fourth goal. Fritzius assisted on the first four goals for Montour, which improved to 8-6 overall and 6-3 in section play.

Mitchell Braidic scored Montour’s final goal with five minutes left in the game.
