Moon's Sydney Ray lets the perfect strike go by from an Ambridge pitcher in action
at Moon High School.

High school sports: Montour baseball prevails; Moon-Ambridge softball halted by rain

Quinn Dalverny and Zander Stern each delivered two-run singles to fuel an eight-run first inning and that sent Montour to an 11-1 victory over Ellwood City Monday in a non-section baseball game at Montour.

The hits by Dalverny and Stern were the only two hits in the inning, as the Spartans took advantage of four walks, two hit batsmen and an error to build their 8-0 lead.

Stern, Dalton Young and Matteo Weber each finished with two hits for Montour, which totaled eight hits in all.

Three Montour pitchers – Cyprian Slifkey, Stern and Nino DiMichele – combined to allow five hits in the five-inning contest.

Taylor Allderdice 8, Bishop Canevin 3

The Dragons scored three times in the second inning and added four more in the third to build a comfortable 7-0 lead on the way to a non-section win over the Crusaders.

Two of the three second-inning runs scored on bases-loaded walks. Satyan Chickering’s two-run double was the key hit in the third inning for Allderdice, and another run scored on a bases-loaded walk.

Jackson Maddix and Aaryn Edwards each had two hits for Bishop Canevin, which totaled just five hits in all.

Springdale vs. Carlynton

The Dynamos parlayed a run-scoring fielder’s choice and an error into a two-run second inning and then went on to build a 4-1 lead in a Class 2A Section 3 game that was suspended in the top of the fifth with Springdale leading.

Carlynton spotted the Dynamos a 2-0 lead in the second inning but cut that deficit in half in the bottom of the inning singles by Tyler Heinrich and Graydon Harvey and a fielder’s choice.

However, that would be the last time the Cougars would score, as they managed just two hits in four innings.

Moon vs. Trinity

The Hillers pushed across three runs in the bottom of the first inning and maintained that lead until the game was suspended in the bottom of the fourth inning. The Class 5A Section 2 game will be resumed at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Washington & Jefferson College.

Moon managed just two hits in the first four innings, with Connor Kunkle and Taylor Ebner each picking up one.

SOFTBALL

Moon vs. Ambridge

Sydney Ray’s two-run bunt single helped the Tigers build a five-run first-inning rally and they held a 5-1 lead over the Bridgers in a non-section contest that was suspended after 4 ½ innings due to rain.

Two more runs came in on a misplayed bunt, and Abby Warnagiris’ sacrifice accounted for the fifth and final run of the inning for Moon.

Katie DeMarco collected three hits for the Tigers and Danica Bacu added two hits and scored a run for Moon.

BOYS LACROSSE

Moon Area 12, Knoch 11

Alec Batchelor found the back of the net with just 4.4 seconds remaining, giving the Tigers a thrilling win over the Knights Friday night in a WPIAL Class 2A Section 2 match.

Batchelor finished with five goals for Moon, which improved to 7-7 on the season heading into its Senior Night contest against Allderdice Tuesday at Tiger Stadium.

Brody Eckert contributed two goals and three assists and Owen Hopkins had an impact performance from the faceoff stripe.

GIRLS RUGBY
