Cameran Chambers’ RBI single snapped a 4-4 tie in the sixth inning and sparked Moon Area to a 5-4 victory over Montour Monday in a Class 5A Section 3 softball game at Montour.
The Tigers’ game-deciding rally started with bunt singles from Danica Bacu and Katie DeMarco and after Bacu was thrown out at third on a fielder’s choice, DeMarco came around to score on Chambers’ line drive single to left.
Montour threatened in the bottom of the seventh when Cayley Hughes led off with a double, but DeMarco retired the next three batters in succession to nail down the win.
Moon scored two runs in each of the first two innings to build a 4-1 lead.
Macy Trost singled home a run and Abby Warnagiris delivered a sacrifice fly to make it 2-0 in the top of the first for Moon.
After the host Spartans scored a run in the bottom of the first on a wild pitch, the Tigers extended their lead to 4-1 in the second on Sydney Ray’s sacrifice fly and Chambers’ RBI double.
Montour clawed back with a single run in the third on a bases-loaded walk and added two more in the fourth on Emily McClean’s RBI single and Shania Cope’s solo home run.
Chambers led Moon’s 10-hit attack with three hits while Trost and Taya Fitzgerald each added two.
DeMarco went the distance on the mound, giving up three earned runs, nine hits and five walks while striking out nine.
McClean finished with three of Montour’s nine hits with Cope, Hughes and Caylee Moser each contributing two.
Montour pitcher Gabby McDowell went all seven innings and gave up 10 hits and five runs – three of which were earned – along with a walk.
Our Lady of the Sacred Heart 11, Burgettstown 1
Julia Pinter’s two-run first-inning triple put the host Chargers on the scoreboard early, and they went on to beat the Blue Devils in a Class 2A Section 3 game.
Ava Ciummo’s RBI single in the third inning widened OLSH’s lead to 3-0. The Chargers wound up scoring at least one run in all six innings to earn the easy win.
OLSH finished with 13 hits and five players – Ciummo, Pinter, Olivia DiGiacomo, Sophia Wasko and Kaylee Seskey — each wound up with two.
Pinter drove in three runs for the Chargers while Ciummo added two RBIs. OLSH pitcher Camryn Hummel allowed six hits and a walk while striking out seven.
Cornell 24, Rochester 19; Cornell 22, Rochester 7
The Raiders brought out the heavy lumber in posting a doubleheader sweep of the Rams, winning the first game 24-19 and taking the second game 22-7 in Class 1A Section 1 action.
Kylie Michlovic went 4 for 6 with two doubles and two RBIs in the first game for Cornell. Emma Ambriz also went 4 for 6 with two doubles and stole a pair of bases.
In the second game, Katie Wegley had a triple and drove in three runs for the Raiders while Sammy Melius had a single and a double, a stolen base and three RBIs.

South Side 15, Bishop Canevin 0
The Rams had little trouble posting a Class 1A Section 1 win over the Crusaders, who managed just two hits — one each from Alexis Summers and Cate Hites. No other details were available.
BASEBALL
Our Lady of the Sacred Heart 15, Springdale 0
Gino Williams had two hits and knocked in three runs and the Chargers used a nine-run first inning to take charge in a Class 2A Section 3 win over the visiting Dynamos.
Iseia Fields-Schulz held Springdale hitless in the four-inning game, walking two and striking out nine.
Dean Douglass and Anthony Hansen both contributed sacrifice flies in the first inning to go along with Williams’ two-run single, and Douglass added an RBI single later in that inning.
Thomas Medwig and Sean Hudac also contributed run-scoring singles and OLSH added another run on a bases-loaded hit batsman.
Chad Minton and Colby Lane each finished with two hits for the winners, with Lane driving in two runs. Ryan DeNinno also contributed a pair of RBIs for OLSH.
Serra Catholic 4, Bishop Canevin 1
A misplayed ground ball allowed two runs to score in the fifth inning, snapping a 1-1 tie and moving the Eagles past the Crusaders in a Class 1A Section 3 contest.
The two unearned runs made it 3-1 and Serra added its final run in the sixth on Jake Jellison’s RBI double.
Bishop Canevin pitchers Tyler Maddix and Kyle Olszewski allowed just five hits combined and two earned runs. The Crusaders also managed only five hits with Nate Astor accounting for two of them.
Baldwin 7, Montour 2
The Highlanders scored in each of the first three innings en route to a Class 5A Section 4 victory over the Spartans, who outhit the winners 6-5 but committed six errors.
Baldwin got on the board with a single run in the first, added two in the second on Matt Nowicki’s two-run single and three in the third on two errors and Aiden Robinson’s RBI base hit to build a 6-0 lead. Meanwhile, Highlanders’ starter Dylan Hartman held the Spartans to a single hit during that stretch.
Montour scored single runs in the fourth and fifth innings on Cyprian Slifkey’s fielder’s choice and Michael Ivanoff’s RBI single. Ivanoff and Matteo Weber each had two hits for Montour.
South Side 20, Carlynton 7
The Rams outhit the Cougars just 10-8, but they took advantage of 10 Carlynton errors in posting a Class 2A Section 3 victory at Carlynton.
The Cougars pushed across four runs in the bottom of the first inning to erase an early 1-0 deficit. Graydon Harvey came through a two-run double to give the Cougars a 2-1 lead and Mason Mulligan followed with a two-run double of his own to widen the Carlynton advantage to 4-1.
But that lead wouldn’t last long, as South Side pushed across seven runs in the top of the second inning to grab an 8-4 lead.
The Rams took advantage of a pair of Carlynton errors to plate two runs and a third run scored on a dropped third strike. South Side also got a sacrifice fly, an RBI single and an RBI double in the frame.
South Side built a 12-4 lead going into the bottom of the fifth when Carlynton scored three runs to cut the deficit to 12-7. Eric Firle’s RBI double accounted for one and two more came home after an error that followed Harvey’s base hit.
Upper St. Clair 4, Moon Area 1
Cooper Stutzman’s RBI single in the opening inning proved to be all the Panthers needed in collecting a Class 5A Section 3 victory over the Tigers.
The game remained 1-0 until the Panthers added three runs in the fifth, with Tanner Schroeck’s two-run single being the key blow.
Moon, 3-9 overall and 3-6 in section play, finally got on the board in the fifth when Thad Longwell delivered a two-out RBI double.
Longwell finished with two of Moon’s six hits. Moon starting pitcher Joey Marasco yielded six hits and one earned run in 4 2/3 innings while Dex Thomas did not allow a hit in his 2 1/3 innings of relief work.
Quaker Valley 10, Sto-Rox 0
Henry Zupanc’s two-run triple in the third inning proved to be the decisive blow as the Quakers downed the Vikings in a Class 3A Section 1 game.
Quaker Valley added three more runs in the fifth and five in the sixth to win going away.
Collecting hits for Sto-Rox were Marquise Thomas, Jamarcus Pierce and Chris Bell.
GIRLS LACROSSE
Pine-Richland 14, Moon Area 8
The Rams claimed a win over the Tigers in a Class 3A Section 2 game. No other details were available.
GIRLS RUGBY
Moon Area 33, Orchard Park 7
Maria Depner and Ava Steed each scored a pair of tries and Laura Brosovic added one to help the Tigers roll to a win Sunday in a friendly match at Orchard Park, N.Y.
Ellie Nurss made good on 4 of 4 conversion attempts while Ava Merklin was 0 for 1.
Moon Area 14, Rockford 12
Ellie Nurss and Ava Steed each had one try and Nurss went 2 for 2 on conversions in the Tigers’ win.
