The WPIAL baseball brackets are scheduled to be released Friday.
SOFTBALL
Hopewell 10, Moon Area 2
Tallulah Showrank had two hits, scored twice and drove in two runs and Alana Covalt added two hits and two RBIs to pace the Vikings past the Tigers in a non-section game.
Victoria Mann and Marina Pinchotti each added two hits for Hopewell, which jumped out to a 4-0 lead after one inning and never was threatened.
Showrank’s two-run triple was the key hit in the first inning while Mann and Dakota Roche each drove in runs with base hits.
Katie DeMarco and Sydney Ray each finished with two hits for Moon, with Ray driving in a run with one of her hits.
BASEBALL
Montour 8, Blackhawk 3
Michael Ivanoff went 2 for 4 and drove in a pair of runs and the visiting Spartans scored five runs in the final two innings combined to pull away from the Cougars in a WPIAL non-section contest.
Montour’s Cyprian Slifkey scored on a wild pitch in the fourth inning to snap a 2-2 tie, and an RBI single by Ivanoff and Zachary Black’s sacrifice fly gave the Spartans some breathing room at 5-2 in the fifth inning.
Montour added three more in the sixth on two fielder’s choices and a wild pitch.
Montour managed just four hits in the game, but they made the most of nine Blackhawk walks. Zander Stern scored three runs and Dalton Young drove in a pair for the Spartans.
Tommy Butts worked the first five innings and gave up three hits and one earned run while walking one and striking out five.
Rochester 15, Carlynton 14
Cameron Janectic drew a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the 10th inning to cap a four-run rally and lift the Rams past the Cougars in a wild non-section game at Rochester.
The two teams combined for 25 hits and Rochester took advantage of 13 Carlynton walks in the win.
The Cougars came from behind several times throughout the game and built a five-run lead at 11-6 after scoring five runs in the top of the eighth inning. But Rochester answered with five in the bottom of the eighth to stay alive.
Carlynton then put three runs on the board in the top of the 10th inning, only to see the Rams rally for four in the bottom of the inning for the win.
Eric Firle and Tyler Heinrich each had two hits and drove in three runs for the Cougars. Connor Hart had three of the team’s 13 hits and also drove in a run while Dominic Ciabattoni had two hits and scored three times. Bradley Stevens also drove in a pair of runs for Carlynton.
Hart’s RBI single in the top of the 10th inning gave Carlynton a 12-11 lead, and Graydon Harvey delivered a two-run single to make it 14-11.
But a steal of home in the bottom of the inning cut the deficit to 14-12 and Devin Woodley’s two-run single tied the score for Rochester. That set the stage Janectic’s bases-loaded walk that ended the game.
Serra Catholic 10, Our Lady of the Sacred Heart 1
Owen Dumbroski, Jake Anderson and Jake Jellison each had two hits and drove in two runs as the Eagles downed the Chargers in a non-section game.
OLSH, which wrapped up its Class 2A Section 3 title Wednesday, led 1-0 after four innings on Dean Douglass’ RBI base hit before Serra erupted for six runs in the fifth inning.
Anderson’s two-run single snapped a 1-1 tie, and after a bases-loaded walk brought home another run, Jellison followed with a base hit that knocked in a pair of runs.
OLSH managed just two hits, with Thomas Medwig and Dean Douglass each collecting one.
