High school tennis: Montour duo set for action in WPIAL doubles tournament

Montour’s duo of Jonah Camardese and Trey Varga will face some long odds when they open play Tuesday in the 2025 WPIAL Class 2A Boys Tennis Doubles Championship.

Camardese, a junior, and Varga, a sophomore, enter the 16-team field as the No. 12 seed.

They’ll begin the tournament by taking on No. 4 seed Cody Clayton and Hunter Hazelwood of Central Valley.

Camardese is no stranger to WPIAL tournament action; a year ago he and Spartan teammate John Rohrkaste pulled off a major surprise by rolling to the doubles championship, defeating Sewickley Academy’s Jackson Quigley and Tejas Mitra, 7-5, 7-5, in the title match.

The Spartans duo defeated the tournament’s top seed, Max Kopf and Ben Terrell of Sewickley Academy in the semifinals.

In the PIAA tournament, Camardese and Rohrkaste fell in the first round to Cole Stolzfus and Hayden Winey of Pequea Valley, 6-4, 6-4.

South Park’s Jonah Jasek and Steven Duing, who finished third in the 2023 tournament, are seeded No. 1 in this year’s WPIAL event.

First-round through semifinal matches will take place at North Allegheny High School.
The consolation final and championship matches will take place Wednesday at Bethel Park High School, with play set to begin at 1 p.m.

The top three finishers in the Class 2A portion of the WPIAL tournament will advance to the PIAA tournament, which will be held May 23-24 at Hershey Racquet Club.

In last week’s Section 2 tournament Camardese and Varga won their first two matches before losing in the semifinals to Praves Wagley and Cole Hammack of South Park, 7-6 (6), 6-3. Camardese and Varga then defeated Vincent Chen and Collin Zheng of Seton LaSalle, 6-2, 6-2, in the third-place consolation match.

Montour’s Dominic Passaro and Braden Kulak lost in their first match to Mike Stasko and Luke Wallace of Ringgold 10-6.

Carlynton’s doubles teams of Max Klein-Leo Shorthouse and Ian Robb-Hayden Wertz both won their opening-round matches but lost in the quarterfinals.

In the Class 3A Section 2 tournament, Nolan Jaczcar and Adam Jaczcar of Moon won their opening-round match before losing in the quarterfinals. Teammates Shaurya Kapoor and Ben Tatala lost in their first match.
