Our Lady of the Sacred Heart’s bid to capture a WPIAL Class 2A Section 1 girls volleyball title came up just short Wednesday night, as the Chargers fell by a 3-2 count to Hopewell at the Angela Activities Center.
The two teams went into Wednesday’s match tied for the top spot in the section with identical 12-1 records, and things appeared to be going the Chargers’ way early when they won the first two sets, 25-15 and 25-20.
But Hopewell roared back to take the final three sets in succession, 25-15, 25-18, 19-17, to finish 13-1 in the section, a game ahead of the Chargers, who wound up 12-2 in the section and 13-3 overall.
“Hopewell played well,” OLSH coach Mike McDonald said afterward. “They earned the win.”
OLSH already has locked up a berth in the WPIAL tournament but first will host its own invitational tournament Saturday. Twelve teams will compete in the event.
Leading the way for OLSH Wednesday night were Leah Parker with 21 kills, and Bella Coladonato contributed 12 kills and 13 digs.
Also contributing for the Chargers were Sophia Wasko, who finished with 21 digs; Carmella Rippole, who added 19 digs; and Lola Garner chipped in with 12 digs. Frankie Schlatterer added eight kills and two blocks.
OLSH’s junior varsity team prevailed 2-1.
