Lola Garner led three players in double figures with 15 points to help Our Lady of the Sacred Heart pull out a 41-39 victory over Riverside Thursday night in a WPIAL Class 3A Section 1 girls basketball game at Ellwood City.
OLSH made up a five-point first-quarter deficit by outscoring Riverside 11-6 in the second period, forging a 22-22 tie at halftime.
Riverside, led by Emma Meyer’s 15 points, took a 32-31 lead heading into the final eight minutes, but the Chargers used a 10-7 advantage in that quarter to escape with the victory.
Leah Parker and Macie Trombetta each contributed 10 points for OLSH, which improved to 13-5 overall and 7-4 in the section.
Trombetta hit a key 3-pointer late in the game for the Chargers, Rowan Winter contributed two big points and Parker hit a free throw to give OLSH a two-point lead with eight seconds to play.
Riverside, which also got 12 points from Addison Drake, inbounded the ball and a long pass went off an OLSH player, giving the Panthers one last shot with two seconds to play. But Parker blocked that shot to preserve the win.
OLSH coach Don Eckerle said he knew his team would be in for a battle against the improving Panthers.
“We beat them in December, but we knew they were improving,” he said. “And the way they jumped on us in that first quarter, I knew it would be tough to get out of there with a win unless we did a lot of things better than we did in that first quarter.
“But our kids stepped up.”
Riverside fell to 12-6 overall and 6-5 in section play.
