Medical examiner determines cause of deaths near Montour Trail

Two men whose bodies were found in Montour Run Creek, near the Montour Trail in Moon Township in late June, were determined to have accidentally drowned.

The Office of the Allegheny County Medical Examiner announced its findings Tuesday in connection with the deaths of Bilson Ramirez, 22, and Alexi Heber Verdugo Lopez, 34, whose bodies were found in the creek on the afternoon of June 28.

Toxicology reports were ordered to determine the cause and manner of death.

According to the county Police Department, the county 911 system was notified shortly after 4 p.m. on June 28 that a body was floating in Montour Run Creek, near the Montour Trail in Moon Township. First responders observed the body of Ramirez, who already was deceased, floating in approximately 6 feet of water. Divers were summoned to the scene and while they were retrieving Ramirez’s body, they discovered Verdugo’s body in approximately 10 feet of water. Preliminary information showed no signs of foul play.

A GoFundMe page was created to raise money to return the body of Ramirez to his native Guatemala and to return Verdugo’s body to his native Mexico.

A person who identified himself as Anibal Ramirez and claimed to be the older brother of Ramirez created the page.

Anibal Ramirez said on the crowdfunding site that Bilson Ramirez left a wife and three children ages 5, 3 and 1 in Guatemala. Anibal Ramirez also said Verdugo left a wife and a 3-year-old daughter in Mexico. Anibal Ramirez initially sought to raise $32,000, but that amount was later reduced to $16,000. As of Tuesday, $1,210 had been raised from 32 donations.
