Moon Area golf teams start season strong with notable wins

The Moon Area girls golf team continued its hot start Thursday with a 159-169 victory over defending state champion Peters Township at Moon Golf Club.

The victory, sparked by senior Angelina Schild’s 1-under-par 35, boosted the Tigers’ record to 3-0 on the young season.

Schild went on a birdie run in the middle of her round with three straight on holes 4, 5 and 6. Schild hit six greens in regulation and recorded a team-low 14 putts.

Senior Aubrey Marasco continued her strong play, hitting six greens in regulation while shooting 40 and dropping a birdie of her own on the par-4 second hole.

Junior Liv DeGori continued her strong play to the season as she shot 40 as well. Sophomore Hope Cordle, who just took up the sport last year, shot a personal-best round of 44, highlighted by dropping a long putt on the second hole for a birdie.

Others competing Thursday were Marleigh Therrien (46), Lily Giunipero with a personal best (47), Gabby Poeta (51) and Adi Hallahan with a personal best (53).

Scoring for Peters were Ellie Benson (34); Betty Glyptis (38); Autumn Merck (46); Sarah Beisheim (51).

Moon’s second victory of the season came Tuesday in a nailbiter against South Fayette at Hickory Heights. The two teams were tied at 176-176 at the end of the regular match, and for the first time in Moon’s 10-year program history, the match went to a playoff.

Schild, Marasco and DeGori played a sudden death hole at even par, with all three parring the first hole. South Fayette posted a total score of plus-one in the playoff, and Schild sank a 5-foot par putt to secure the victory.

Schild hit eight of nine greens in regulation and had three birdies on the way to a 36. DeGori shot 37, posting two birdies.

Marasco finished with a 49 and Cordle added a 54.

The Tigers’ hot start shouldn’t come as a surprise, as they’ve claimed two section titles and four second-place finishes in Ken Firmstone’s first nine years at the helm.

Firmstone’s teams have made six appearances in the WPIAL Class 3A Girls Team Championship, finishing as high as third multiple times.

The Tigers will rely on a quartet of seniors in No. 1 Schild, No. 3 Marasco and No. 4 Therrien, with the junior DeGori slotting in at No. 2. Cordle is Moon’s No. 5 starter, and the team also features juniors Poeta and Giunipero.

The Tigers will be back in action Monday as they take on Mt. Lebanon at Mt. Lebanon GC.
