Moon Area School District breaks ground on high school athletic facilities project

A construction project that will yield a new 50,000-square-foot indoor athletic center and upgrades to other athletic facilities on the Moon Area High School campus is officially underway.

A groundbreaking ceremony was held Tuesday to signal and celebrate the start of various stadium renovations on the Moon campus.

The $40 million-plus project, which will be paid for by bond proceeds and the Moon Area School District’s capital reserve funds, includes construction and renovations to the Tiger Stadium press box, field house and campus tennis courts.

The new 50,000-square-foot athletic facility will feature an indoor turf field, elevated walking track, weight room, simulator room, locker room, trainer room, board room with executive sessions room and concessions stands.

The 5,700-square-foot press box includes a faculty development room, press area, announcer area, home and away coaches’ rooms and filming platforms. Renovations to the 15,000-square-foot field house will include updates to locker rooms, coaches and officials office, and more.

The district also has launched a “Fueling Champions” partnership program, which features several packages that include benefits such as sponsor recognition on the district website, public address announcement during home games, a banner linked to a sponsor business on district websites, business names included on print and social media campaigns, digital advertising on livestreams, digital advertising on the stadium scoreboard during home athletic contests and a 30-second commercial at each home athletic event.

The highest level of sponsorship also includes official naming rights to one of Moon Area’s facilities. No dollar figures are attached to any of the partnership packages, which can be found here.

The bids associated with the stadium renovation project exceed $39 million in total, while the new turfed baseball and softball fields – a project that includes an additional multipurpose field – could cost up to $3.45 million, based on material made available last December.

More recent information indicated that the cost of the tennis courts/parking lot project would be approximately $4.3 million.

School officials said in December that funding for the stadium renovation work will come from bond proceeds, and that costs associated with the new baseball/softball/multipurpose turf project will be covered by the district’s capital reserve fund.

District Superintendent Jason D’Alesio said at that time that the goal is to have the new turf baseball and softball fields – and the new multipurpose field – ready for play by the fall of 2026. He said work on that project would begin as soon as the 2026 baseball and softball seasons end.

D’Alesio also said the completion date for the stadium renovations and the new indoor sports facility – which also will house a concessions area — is estimated at mid-August 2027.

That means that Moon High School athletic teams that use the stadium must play their “home” games elsewhere during the 2026-27 school year.
