Northern Data, a provider of Artificial Intelligence and High Performance Computing solutions, announced the opening of its new North American AI and HPC data center located in Robinson Township.
Located at 615 McMichael Road, the facility will house large-scale computer infrastructure to manage complex and demanding workloads. The Pittsburgh Data Center, acquired in early 2024 and retrofitted into an existing structure, will be operated by Ardent Data Centers, a subsidiary of Northern Data, headquartered in Frankfurt, Germany.
The Ardent-run location will serve as a model for future AI growth opportunities across North America, according to an announcement made June 4, 2025.
“[This] announcement marks a significant step in Northern Data’s goal of becoming a leading global AI infrastructure provider. Our commitment to strategic site selection, integration of the latest data center technologies and our modular design strategy positions us for significant growth opportunities,” said John Hoffman, chief operating officer.
Built specifically to utilize energy-efficient rear door heat exchangers and direct-to-chip liquid cooling, the new data center supports AI workloads and will target Power Usage Effectiveness as low as 1.15. According to the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, under the US Department of Energy and Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy, a PUE of 1.0 indicates a perfectly efficient data center, where all power is used directly for the IT equipment, with no power wasted on infrastructure.
Other plans include working toward 20 megawatts of phased capacity, specifically created to meet AI model training requirements and HPC. The center will be equipped with latest liquid cooling technology to maximize performance and efficiency, as well.
