PIAA swimming: Cornell’s Chamberlain takes home medal after seventh-place finish in 100 breaststroke

Three West Hills swimmers wrapped up their respective seasons Saturday at the PIAA Swimming and Diving Championships at the Kinney Natatorium on the campus of Bucknell University in Lewisburg and one of them came home with some new hardware.

Mimi Chamberlain, a sophomore from Cornell, placed seventh in the Class 2A girls 100 breaststroke final with a time of 1 minute, 6.03 seconds, to bring home her first PIAA medal.

The top eight finishers in each event earn medals.

Chamberlain competed in last year’s PIAA meet and reached the consolation finals in the 100 breaststroke.

On Saturday, Chamberlain posted the sixth-fastest time – 1 minute, 5.71 seconds – in the 100 breaststroke prelims to advance to the finals.

Fellow Raider Noah Pickett wound up 16th in the 500 freestyle prelims with a time of 4:54.02 but came back to place ninth overall – and first among the eight swimmers competing in the B final – with a time of 4:43.52. Pickett’s time in the B final was faster than three of the eight swimmers who competed in the championship final but he wasn’t able to medal because he was in the B final.

Only those swimmers competing in the A final are awarded medals.

Carlynton sophomore Evey Fahnestock also competed in the girls 100 breaststroke Saturday but did not advance beyond the preliminaries.

Fahnestock finished 17th with a time of 1:07.98 and only the top 16 move on to the finals and the B finals.

Our Lady of the Sacred Heart at Serra Catholic Tournament

A 10-run second inning proved to be the difference for the Chargers in a 15-4 pounding of Rochester in their second game of the Serra Catholic Tournament.

OLSH dropped its tournament opener, 8-5, to Jeannette earlier Saturday.

Chad Minton doubled home a pair of runs, Ryan DeNinno contributed an RBI double and Colby Lane and Angelo Ursida chipped in with RBI singles in that second inning against Rochester. Owen Minzer also added a sacrifice fly.

DeNinno led the 11-hit attack by going 3 for 3 while Dean Douglass and Minton each had two hits and drove in three runs. Lane and Wyatt Walsh each drove in a pair of runs while Ursida finished with a pair of hits.

In the first game, a three-run second inning was key for Jeannette in its victory. Two of Jeannette’s runs in that inning came on bases-loaded walks – one of which tied the game and the second of which gave the Jayhawks a 5-4 lead. Wyatt Schaeffer then singled home a run to make it 6-4.

After Jeannette extended its lead to 7-4, the Chargers pulled to within two runs on Ursida’s sacrifice fly, but they never got closer.

DeNinno led OLSH’s five-hit attack with a double and a single while Mike Spinelli had a hit and an RBI.

Hunter Mattern pitched five innings of two-hit ball in relief. Mattern gave up one earned run and walked four while striking out seven.

Moon vs. Regis/Hollins at Tampa Bay

Andrew Cross smacked a grand slam and Chris Sandor pitched four shutout innings with six strikeouts to pace the Tigers to a 15-0 win over Regis Saturday, and they followed that with a 15-0 victory over Hollins.

Seven other players collected hits for the Tigers in the four-inning first game, including Savario Vandetti, who had an inside-the-park home run and drove in another run. Will Swisher and Taylor Ebner each had a double and an RBI. Also finishing with a hit and an RBI were Nick Machusko, Owen Amey and Ryan Joyce.

In the second game, Nate Weber and Carter Posey combined for a one-hit shutout. Vandetti, Cross, Machusko, Taylor Ebner, Owen Amey and Jack Ambrozic each had two hits, with both of Machusko’s going for two bases. Amey, Ebner and Thad Longwell all had doubles. Machusko drove in three runs while Vandetti, Ebener and Longwell each drove in two runs.

Weber did not allow a hit in his four innings of work. He walked one and struck out six.
