RMU hockey: Men host Holy Cross while women travel to Erie to meet Mercyhurst

In what has been a tough season for both the Robert Morris men’s and women’s hockey teams, the Colonials will look to turn things around, beginning this weekend.

First off, the men’s team hosts Holy Cross for a two-game Atlantic Hockey America conference matchup at Clearview Arena on Friday, Jan. 23, and Saturday, Jan. 24, with puck drop at 7 p.m. both nights.

The Colonials currently sit with a 5-15-2 record overall, including a 5-8-1 record in conference play, and have lost five of their last six games. The team is seventh in the AHA standings, with Holy Cross currently third with a 9-3-2 conference record. The Crusaders are 11-9-2 overall.

RMU has not beaten Holy Cross in the last four matchups between the two teams, with two of them ending in ties. Robert Morris did win in the shootout in one of the games for the extra point.

The last time Robert Morris defeated Holy Cross was March 8, 2020, when the Colonials got a 5-1 win.

RMU also has struggled on home ice this season, with a 1-5-1 record so far on Neville Island.

The Colonials will look to build on the momentum from last weekend’s effort in West Point, where they picked up three of the available four points in a pair of games against Army.

On Friday, the team fell in overtime 3-2, but came back and shut out the Black Knights 3-0 on Saturday.

Tanner Klimpke is the Colonials’ leading offensive threat on the season with eight goals and 14 points in 22 games. Cameron Garvey is second with five goals and 12 points.

As for they RMU women, they travel to Erie to take on Mercyhurst University at 3 p.m. Friday, Jan. 23, and 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 24.

The Colonials currently hold a record of 10-14-2 overall and a 6-8-2 mark in AHA play, good enough for sixth in the conference. Mercyhurst is in second place with a 12-5-1 record, and the Lakers are 16-10-2 overall.

The RMU women are looking to rebound after being shut out in both games against Syracuse earlier this month, falling 3-0 Friday, Jan. 9, and 2-0 Saturday, Jan. 10.

The Colonials hosted Mercyhurst earlier this season, falling in both games, 5-1 and 7-2, on Nov. 7-8, respectively.

The RMU women have lost their last eight games against Mercyhurst, while being outscored 43-6 in that span. Their last win against Mercyhurst came during the 2023-24 season, in which the Colonials won 5-0 in Erie.

Jessica MacKinnon leads RMU in scoring with 13 goals and 28 points while Morgan Giannone has nine goals and 20 points. MacKinnon also leads all NCAA women in faceoff wins with 353.
