RMU hockey: Men open AHA slate at home against Niagara; women host Penn State

The Robert Morris men’s hockey team will open its Atlantic Hockey America conference schedule at home Friday by taking on Niagara University at 7 p.m. Friday at Clearview Arena at the Robert Morris Island Sports Center on Neville Island.

Following Friday’s conference opener, the Colonials – who bring a 3-2-1 record into the weekend’s action – will travel to Niagara Falls, N.Y., Saturday to complete the second half of the back-to-back gauntlet against the Purple Eagles.

The Colonials traveled to Indiana last weekend to take on the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in back-to-back nonconference games.  In Friday’s first game, RMU jumped out to a 2-0 lead on goals by Dominic Elliott and Patrick Johnson, but the Fighting Irish battled back quickly, scoring five consecutive goals.

Jackson Reineke added a third goal for RMU before Notre Dame closed out the scoring for a 6-3 victory.

The following evening, the Colonials took an early 1-0 lead on a goal by Michael Craig.  Notre Dame responded with two goals before a late goal by RMU’s George Krotiris tied the game.

The game ended in a 2-2 tie, but both teams agreed to a shoot-out, which Cameron Garvey won with a goal for RMU.

For the season, Reineke leads RMU with two goals and Bruce McDonald has added four points.  Freshman goalie Charlie Schenkel has seen a majority of the action in net for the Colonials.

RMU women entertain Penn State Friday, Saturday

The Colonials return to action at 3 p.m. Friday, Oct. 31, against Penn State in the first of two back-to-back meetings at Clearview Arena. The two teams will meet again at 5 p.m. Saturday at the Robert Morris Island Sports Center on Neville Island.

The Colonials – 5-1 overall and 3-1 in conference play — traveled to Delaware last weekend to take on the Blue Hens in back-to-back conference games and came away with a pair of 5-0 victories.

In the first game, RMU dominated the action, both offensively and defensively. Jessica McKinnon and Alaina Giampietro scored two goals each and Morgan Giannone added another. Lucy Phillips provided the shutout in goal for Robert Morris.

In Saturday’s game, the Colonials again proved dominant on both sides of the ice, with Taylor Storey, McKinnon, Giannone, Catriona Crarer and Thalia D’Elia each scoring one goal. Goaltender Maggie Hatch did not allow a goal for RMU.

On the season, McKinnon leads the team with five goals and 13 points. Giannone and Giampietro also have five goals each for the Colonials.  In goal, Hatch has a 2.34 goals against average and Phillips is at 2.50 GAA.
