The power of commercials and community in celebrating small businesses like ours

West Hills Gazette partners Frank Garland and Sonja Reis (front) with Bill Flanagan, host and producer of “Our Region’s Business.”

It’s July! Do you know what that means? West Hills Gazette is being honored all month long as part of the “Going to Bat for Small Business presented by PNC” promotion held in conjunction with the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Today, these video and audio commercials – just a small part of the marketing help West Hills Gazette is receiving as July’s small business – went live, meaning we can now share them with you. Don’t laugh, we’re writers and editors, not actors.

Also today, my partner Frank Garland and I met with Bill Flanagan to be interviewed for a segment on “Our Region’s Business.” This connection is just one of many we’ve been able to make because of Garland’s grant-writing prowess. And of course, the generosity of PNC and the Pirates.

Flanagan, chief corporate relations officer for the Allegheny Conference on Community Development, serves as host and producer of the weekly business public affairs program on WPXI-TV, the Pittsburgh Cable News Channel and YouTube.

Each month, he highlights one of the six small businesses chosen as the 2025 Pirates’ honorees. Our broadcast is expected to air on Sunday, July 27.

The six small businesses being recognized for their positive impact on their communities are:

  • Atlas Dreams Languages
  • Aunt Cheryl’s Baking & Catering
  • Community Equip’d
  • Lincoln Avenue Brewery
  • The Art Supply Co.
  • West Hills Gazette

The marketing support being awarded to West Hills Gazette and the other five small businesses is valued at up to $100,000 and includes a $5,000 grant. This is the program’s sixth season and is held in conjunction with Major League Baseball teams across the country.

We at the Gazette hope that marketing boost will shine more light on the work we’re doing to bring you the news you need, whether that’s traditional hard news, features, opinion or sports. Our month in the “Going to Bat for Small Business” spotlight coincides with the West Hills Gazette’s first birthday.

“Like all 1-year-olds, we’ve wobbled a bit on occasion, but we’re finding our footing one step at a time,” said Garland.
