Four players from three West Hills area high schools have been named to the Pennsylvania State Baseball Coaches Association All-State team.
Outfielder Jackson Maddix of Bishop Canevin was named to the Class 1A first team, and catcher Thomas Medwig of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart was chosen for the Class 2A first team.
Medwig’s teammate, pitcher Iseia Fields-Schulz, was one of five pitchers selected for the Class 2A second team. And Montour outfielder Matteo Weber was named to the Class 5A second team.
Maddix, a sophomore, led the Crusaders with a .489 batting average and 18 RBIs and was second on the team in runs scored with 19. He had an on-base percentage of .619, a .766 slugging percentage and a 1.385 OPS.
In addition, he displayed strong defensive skills in the outfield, according to Bishop Canevin coach Craig Sonson.
“It can be difficult bouncing around to different outfield spots, but he played right field very well, and then when his brother (Tyler) was pitching, he played center field,” he said.
“He has a very strong arm and tracks the ball very well.”
Sonson said Maddix has been a key member of the team dating back to his freshman year. “He has a great impact on the team with everything he does,” Sonson said. “The way he goes about his business, he’s very conscientious. He’s a quiet kid, but a good leader. It’s hard to get that out of a sophomore.”
Sonson said the left-handed hitting Maddix’s bat-to-ball skills were exceptional, noting that in 63 plate appearances, he struck out just four times.
“He had many pull-side hits,” he said. “He likes to get out in front and pull the ball down the line.”
Sonson said Maddix also is a talented pitcher and although he didn’t start pitching for the Crusaders until late this past season, he will be a mainstay on the mound in 2026.
“We’ll be counting on him to take the bump for us next spring,” said Sonson, whose team reached the quarterfinals of the WPIAL Class 1A Tournament before being eliminated.
This marks the second year in a row that one of the Maddix brothers was named to the all-state team, as Tyler Maddix earned first-team honors last year as an outfielder. Tyler Maddix graduated and is scheduled to play baseball at Washington & Jefferson next year.
Medwig, a 6-foot-7 senior who is bound for Marietta College, batted a team-leading .581, collecting 36 hits in 62 at-bats. He had 10 doubles and two triples to help the Chargers make their first PIAA Tournament appearance since 2013.
Medwig could not appear in postseason play because he had played previously for Upper St. Clair, so he did all his damage in the regular season.
OLSH coach Phil McCarren said the 6-foot-7 Medwig is a deserving choice as an All-State selection – and not just due to his offensive prowess.
“He has good physical size and he’s an excellent defensive catcher – he’s a great blocker and has a cannon for an arm,” he said.
Fields-Schulz, who plans to play baseball at Point Park University, was the ace of the OLSH pitching staff with an 8-3 record and a 1.94 earned-run average. He also broke the school record for regular-season strikeouts and overall strikeouts with 82 and 109, respectively.
“He threw some great games for us,” McCarren said of Fields-Schulz. “He had a tremendous season.”
Weber, a left-handed hitting junior, appeared in 18 games for the Spartans this season and compiled a .468 batting average, collecting 22 hits in 47 at-bats, according to statistics on the MaxPreps website.
Weber drove in 11 runs and scored 21 runs while walking 21 times and striking out just three times. Weber slugged .617 and registered an OPS of 1.255.
(Montour’s Matteo Weber was inadvertently omitted from the original story that appeared on June 19, 2025.)
