In high school soccer action last week, Carlynton’s boys and girls teams both continued their winning ways, Moon boys swept Ambridge, Our Lady of the Sacred Heart boys knocked off Bishop Canevin with a 6-0 road victory, and Montour beat Baldwin away from home.
Starting in boys action, Moon made it 13 straight wins without a loss –the first-place Tigers are 8-0 in WPIAL Class 3A Section 4 action and 13-0 overall – after defeating Ambridge (2-7 overall, 1-6 in the section) 4-0 at home.
The Tigers took a 1-0 lead in the first half, when Evan Thomas scored midway through the half. With minutes left in the first half, Moon’s Hayden Dunn doubled his team’s advantage. In the second half, with less than a quarter of the game remaining, the Tigers were awarded a penalty kick, which Finnian Dengel put away. Then, with 3 minutes remaining, Thomas got his second goal of the match, and Moon’s fourth. The Tigers used two keepers for their shutout – Samuel Brancato in the first half and William Guarino in the second.
In more boys action, Carlynton – 10-3 overall and 5-1 in Class A Section 3 play, good for second place behind OLSH – beat Chartiers-Houston (1-13 overall, 1-4 in section play) 4-0 at home Tuesday, Sept. 24.
The Cougars got two goals in each half and managed to keep the shutout throughout the game. Hamza Alezzo and Mateo Carrasco scored first-half goals for Carlynton, and in the second half Fadi Juuma and Yusef Sahin each got a goal for the home side. Hayden Wertz contributed two assists in this match for Carlynton, and Alezzo also managed to get an assist.
Carlynton’s girls team – 9-3 overall and 5-3 in Class A Section 3 action – also kept its winning form this week when it beat South Allegheny (1-4 overall, 0-4 in section play) 5-0 at home Wednesday and blanked South Side 4-0 Thursday.
In Wednesday’s game, the Cougars broke the stalemate after about 10 minutes, when Riley Mauro scored from a wonderfully threaded pass by Sophia O’Brien, who played an outstanding game. A few minutes later, O’Brien was on the receiving end, when she scored off a controlled assist by Gigi Choate.
In the second half, the Cougars started on the attack and finally got their third goal. It was Choate’s turn to reap the benefits of the Cougars’ prolific offense as she slotted home off the post from an O’Brien corner kick.
Bella D’Antonio got the fourth goal minutes later, when she hit one over the South Allegheny goalkeeper to make it 4-0. Finally, O’Brien rounded off her match with a second goal from yet another Choate assist. O’Brien finished with two goals and two assists while Choate chipped in with one goal and two assists.
In Thursday’s Senior Night game, the Cougars used three first-half goals to take control en route to a 4-0 shutout of South Side.
Choate put Carlynton on the board early off a feed from Mauro less than two minutes into the game. Mauro then directed an excellent D’Antonio cross into the back of the net, and the Cougars extended their lead to 3-0 later in the half on O’Brien’s goal off a pass from Mauro.
Choate closed the scoring with a second-half goal as the Cougars honored seniors Grace Prepelka, Quinland Delrosario and Sarah Duffy with a win.
Back to boys action, Bishop Canevin (1-10 overall and 0-6 in Class A Section 3 play) lost 6-0 Thursday to OLSH, which is atop Section 3 with a 6-0 record and is 8-1 overall.
The Chargers scored early into the game from a corner kick and by the end of the first half, OLSH had a 4-0 lead. The Chargers scored again early into the second half, then at the end of the match managed to get one more, making it six goals without a response.
Montour, 8-5 overall and 6-2 in Class 3A Section 4 – one notch behind section-leading Moon – beat Baldwin 1-0 Wednesday.
The match’s only goal came from Montour’s Dom Passaro, who was assisted by Anthony Dalessandri. Spartans freshman goalkeeper Liam Hovanic played the entire match and recorded the clean sheet along with his defensive line.
