What a difference a couple of days makes.
Two days after losing by more than 50 points to Upper St. Clair, the Bishop Canevin boys basketball team rebounded and took down Lincoln Park, 48-38, on the road Thursday night.
The win was the first in three starts for the Class 3A Crusaders, who dropped their opener Sunday to The Neighborhood Academy, 62-31, before falling 78-22 to Upper St. Clair Tuesday night. Lincoln Park won last year’s WPIAL Class 4A title and moved up to Class 5A this season.
The Crusaders’ 48-point output Thursday night was just five shy of the total number of points they scored in their first two games combined.
Bishop Canevin coach Aaron McGee pointed to two phases of the game that made the difference Thursday night.
“I think our effort was much better on the defensive end of the floor,” he said. “And our rebounding was better.”
Jackson Maddix posted a double-double, scoring 19 points and grabbing 13 rebounds to pace Bishop Canevin. Drew Allen added 14 points for the Crusaders.
GIRLS: Sto-Rox 42, Burgettstown 36
Rae Johnston scored 16 points to spark the visiting Vikings, who won for the third time in four starts this season after winning just four games all of last season.
Johnston hit four 3-pointers on the night, including three in the first quarter when she totaled 11 points. Johnston’s hot start helped Sto-Rox jump to a 17-12 lead, and the Vikings widened that lead to 25-19 at halftime.
The Vikings at one point led by as many as 12 points, and that enabled coach Jeff Stuart to get playing time for a number of backups. When the Blue Devils trimmed that margin late, Stuart went back to his starters to secure the win.
“I like to try to get everyone playing to get them experience in case I need them down the road,” said Stuart, whose team is off until Tuesday and starts section play Thursday against New Brighton.
“You have to get some experience for younger kids or it’s going to come back to bite you.”
Brook Sykes added 10 points for Sto-Rox. Savanna Rush led Burgettstown with 12 points and Miley Stroud added 10 in the loss.
