Boys basketball: Avsec powers OLSH past Riverview in season opener

Austin Avsec scored 11 of his game-high 23 points in the third quarter to help Our Lady of the Sacred Heart pull away and claim a 66-46 boys basketball victory over host Riverview Tuesday night in the Chargers’ season opener.

Jake Johnson added 14 points for OLSH, 10 of which came in the first half when the Chargers built a 27-17 lead.

Nolan Reed contributed 11 points for OLSH, which is playing without one of its top players to start the season in Tiernan McCullough, who is sidelined with a knee injury.

Reed scored six of his 11 points in the third quarter, when the Chargers outscored the Raiders 25-17 to put the game away.

Rex Roberts scored 20 of Riverview’s 46 points.


HOCKEY

Montour 4, Hampton 0

Trey Varga scored a pair of third-period goals to help Montour salt away a shutout win over the Talbots in a PIHL Varsity A Blue Division matchup Monday night at the RMU Island Sports Center.

After a scoreless first period, Montour took a 1-0 lead in the second period when Aidan Jennings scored a power play goal off assists from Donnie Seremak and Braden Kulak.

Varga then scored the first of his two goals in the fifth minute of the third period, with assists from Kulak and Seremak.

Seremak closed the scoring with an empty net goal in the game’s final minute.

Montour improved to 3-5-1-1 with the win and now is in seventh place in the 12-team division with 12 points.
