Boys basketball: Bishop Canevin, Moon Area win; Montour falls to Allderdice

Drew Allen hit for 26 points to lead three players in double figures and pace Bishop Canevin to a 75-67 victory over Belle Vernon Saturday in the West Mifflin boys basketball tournament.

Bishop Canevin trailed by four after one quarter, then used a 21-10 advantage in the second quarter to build a 36-29 lead at halftime. Allen scored nine of the Crusaders’ 21 second-quarter points.

Belle Vernon turned the tables in the third quarter, outscoring the Crusaders 19-11 to take a 48-47 lead into the fourth quarter.

That’s when Bishop Canevin took control, pouring in 28 points to 19 for the Leopards to take home the victory.

Damar Olds contributed 19 points for the Crusaders, who improved to 2-0, while Lamier Wade chipped in 14.

Tim Tyree Jr., Bishop Canevin’s first-year coach, said his team played particularly well in the second half.

“I’m really proud of the team effort,” he said. “Drew Allen was huge and Damar Olds played a really complete game.

“When we move the ball, we will be hard to beat. But we have a lot of work to do to be where we want to be.”

Luca Ghilani and Elijah Majors each scored 18 points to lead Belle Vernon.

Allderdice 42, Montour 39

Keilyn Walden’s short jumper with 18 seconds remaining proved to be the difference in the Dragons’ season-opening win over the visiting Spartans.

Montour, which was led by Mark Carter’s 19 points, owned a 33-31 lead heading into the fourth quarter but could manage just six points while giving up 11 over the final eight minutes.

Both teams committed several turnovers in that quarter and Montour also missed a pair of free throws while trailing by a point at 38-37.

Carter’s spinning layup put Montour on top 39-38 with 1 minute, 10 seconds to play, but Walden’s basket in the lane gave Allderdice a 40-39 lead.

A free throw by Zachary Coffey with 7.1 seconds left made it 41-39, and another free throw with 2.1 seconds remaining increased the lead to 42-39.

Montour had one final shot to tie it, but Carter’s desperation attempt was off the mark.

Markus Kuhn led Allderdice with 11 points.

Montour coach Bill Minear said despite the outcome, the overall experience was a good one for his young team.

“It was a good atmosphere to start the season,” he said. “Allderdice has won the City League the past six years and had three starters back.”

Still, Minear acknowledged the Spartans – who lost all five of last year’s starters to graduation — have plenty of room for improvement.

“We played sloppy at times, and we have to develop our chemistry and establish roles with five new starters,” he said.

Minear said poor free throw shooting – the Spartans missed eight attempts on the afternoon – also played a key role in the loss.

“On the plus side, holding Allderdice to 42 points gives us a lot to build on,” he said.

Moon Area 70, Imani Christian 46

Jackson Bauman scored a game-high 17 points to pace the Tigers in their season debut at the Lincoln Park Tournament at Geneva College.

Caden Kopay added 14 points for Moon and AJ Buford contributed 12, with 10 of those coming in the opening quarter.

The Tigers led 37-28 at halftime and continued to pull away in the final two quarters.

Donovan Gordon scored 14 points to lead Imani Christian.
