Boys basketball: Montour, Moon post wins; Carlynton comes up short

Colton Straight led four players in double figures with 24 points as Montour rolled to an 81-64 victory over Mars Saturday morning in a WPIAL Class 5A Section 4 boys basketball matchup at Mars.

Ama Sow, who connected for his 1,000th career point Friday night, added 23 points for the Spartans, who improved to 12-1 overall and 7-0 in section play.

Montour scored at least 20 points in three of the four quarters, hitting for 22 in the first, 23 in the second and 23 in the fourth. The Spartans built a nine-point lead after one quarter and widened their margin to 45-31 at halftime.

Mars, which was led by Austin Wroblewski’s 17 points, gained a little ground in the third quarter, outscoring Montour 18-13, but the Spartans were never threatened.

Kaleb Platz added 16 points for Montour and AJ Alston contributed 12 points in the win.
Will Wilson added 15 points for Mars.


Moon Area 54, Allderdice 52

Carter Tumulty scored a game-high 19 points, including three 3-pointers, and the Tigers held off the Dragons for a non-section win.

Allderdice held Moon’s Michael Santicola to five points, but Braeden Stuart backed up Tumulty with 13, and AJ Buford scored five big points in the fourth quarter to help the Tigers hold on to improve to 12-3 on the season.

Moon led 18-14 after one quarter and 32-28 at halftime, but the Tigers couldn’t shake the Dragons in the second half, as they led just 44-39 going into the final eight minutes. Allderdice, the first-place team in the City League, had a chance to tie or win the game but misfired on a shot at the buzzer.

Lukas Stead scored 18 points to lead Allderdice, with 13 of them coming in the first half, and Asher Schwartz contributed 14. Trey Schachter contributed 13 in a losing cause.

Amir Turner finished with eight points for Moon, with six of them coming in the first quarter.


Ambridge 74 Carlynton 64

Adam Fernandez poured in 28 points, including eight in the fourth quarter, and the Bridgers took advantage of some costly turnovers and poor free throw shooting on the part of the Cougars to claim the non-section win at Carlynton.

Jaerd Astorino contributed 23 points for Ambridge, which led 12-9 after one quarter and then got into a shooting war in the second quarter, outscoring the Cougars 26-24 to take a 36-35 lead at halftime.

Astorino scored 10 in the third quarter as Ambridge increased its lead to 56-53 going into the final eight minutes, and there the Bridgers outscored Carlynton 18-11 to seal the win.

Damien Holloway scored 20 points to lead Carlynton, with nine of them coming in that final quarter. Only one other player – Devonte Dean – scored in the fourth quarter for Carlynton.

The Cougars went just 1 for 5 from the free throw line in the last quarter and were 8 for 22 for the game.

Mikey Jenkins added 14 points for Carlynton, which fell to 7-7 overall, and Dean contributed 12.
