Boys basketball: Moon, Montour take wins at PPG Paints Arena

Moon Area used a big third quarter to pull away and beat South Fayette, 46-29, Sunday in the Pittsburgh Holiday Hoops Classic at PPG Paints Arena.

The Tigers shook off a slow start that saw them score just four first-quarter points and built a 19-16 halftime lead. They continued to operate at high efficiency in the third quarter, outscoring the Lions 15-3 to take a 34-19 lead heading into the final quarter.

Michael Santicola scored six of his game-high 12 points in the third quarter to lead Moon, which improved to 5-2 overall on the season.

“We strung some stops together and got out in transition for some easy buckets,” said Moon coach Gino Palmosina.

Braeden Stuart contributed 10 points for the Tigers and Amir Turner added nine, with six coming in the second quarter.

Ama Sow dominated the paint with 28 points, 20 rebounds and five blocked shots as the Spartans pummeled the Leopards in the Pittsburgh Holiday Hoops Classic at PPG Paints Arena.

Sow, the 6-foot-11 senior bound for the University of Tennessee-Martin, had plenty of help from his friends as Kaleb Platz scored 15 points, draining all three of his 3-point attempts, and Colton Straight added 13.

Montour coach Bill Minear, who watched his team win its sixth straight game without a loss, said his team defended well and executed very well in transition.

“Our experience showed against Lincoln Park, which started five freshmen,” Minear said.

The win was the Spartans’ third in three neutral-site contests. “That will hopefully get us ready for what occurs in the playoffs,” Minear said.
