Ama Tening Sow scored a game-high 23 points and host Montour staged a second-half rally to beat Allderdice, 57-51, Tuesday night in a boys basketball season-opener for both schools.
In other action involving West Hills area teams, Our Lady of the Sacred Heart pounded Riverview, 57-23, Carlynton defeated Steel Valley, 57-50, Sto-Rox downed Westinghouse, 45-35, Cornell whipped Environmental Charter, 58-41, and Bishop Canevin lost 78-22 to Upper St. Clair.
Montour led 14-10 after one quarter but Allderdice – the three-time defending City League champion – pulled to within a point at halftime at 24-23.
The Dragons built a lead as big as eight points in the third quarter, but Montour sophomore Rob Schmitt hit two big 3-pointers to bring the Spartans back.
Montour trailed 38-36 heading after three quarters but Sow and Colton Straight came up big in the final quarter, combining for all of the Spartans’ 21 points to lead the comeback win. Montour outscored the visitors 21-13 in the final eight minutes, with Straight scoring 11 and Sow 10.
Montour coach Bill Minear said Sow and Straight both made key defensive plays in addition to hitting some big shots in the final quarter for the Spartans.
Asher Schwartz scored 20 points to lead Allderdice and Trey Schachter added 11.
Our Lady of the Sacred Heart 57, Riverview 23
Jake Johnson led three players in double figures with 19 points as the Chargers overpowered the Raiders in OLSH’s season-opener.
Patrick Altmar and Tiernan McCullough each added 11 points for the winners, who bolted to a 15-1 first-quarter lead and owned a 27-3 advantage at halftime. Johnston scored six of his points in that opening quarter and McCullough added four.
Alex Schultheis scored 11 points for Riverview, which fell to 2-1.
Sto-Rox 45, Westinghouse 35
Karic Wills led a balanced attack with 11 points to spark the Vikings past the Bulldogs.
Javon Nelson added seven points for Sto-Rox, with all of them coming in the first quarter when the Vikings built an 18-7 lead.
Sto-Rox increased its margin to 28-11 at halftime and went on to secure the victory. The win evened the Vikings’ record at 1-1.
Hasaan Watts scored 13 points to lead Westinghouse.
Cornell 58, Environmental Charter 41
Santana Lee scored a game-high 19 points to lead the way for the Raiders in their season-opener. Cornell led 10-4 after one quarter and widened its lead to 27-14 at halftime.
Eduardo Benitez added 17 points for the winner and his brother, Alex, contributed 12.
Tyler Hurst’s 17 points paced Environmental Charter.
Carlynton 57, Steel Valley 50
The host Cougars got off to a slow start, spotting the Ironmen a 14-6 lead after one quarter, but they rallied to take a 22-19 halftime lead and led by as many as 16 points late in the game before holding on down the stretch for a season-opening win.
Carlynton built a 52-36 lead with less than three minutes remaining but Steel Valley used a 12-0 run to pull within four at 52-48 with 44 seconds to play in the game.
The Cougars were hurt by poor free-throw shooting, as they converted just 10 of 28 attempts on the night. However, they converted several key free throws down the stretch to put the game away.
Carlynton used a balanced attack to secure the victory. Mike Jenkins led the way with 15 points, followed by Devonte Dean with 14, Damien Holloway with 12 and Mark Jameson with 11. Dean scored 10 of his 14 in the second half while Jenkins and Jameson each added eight in the final two quarters.
Upper St. Clair 78, Bishop Canevin 22
Brothers Tyler and Ryan Robbins each scored 16 points to lead four players in double figures as the Panthers handed the Crusaders their second loss in as many games.
Tyler Robbins, a 6-foot-10 senior, and the 6-6 Ryan Robbins, who’s a sophomore, led a balanced attack for Upper St. Clair. Jake Foster added 13 points for the winners and Dane York contributed 12.
The Panthers roared to a 20-2 first-quarter lead and poured in 29 second-quarter points to take a 49-14 halftime lead.
Drew Allen’s nine points led Bishop Canevin.
