Boys basketball: Turnovers, rebounding doom Bishop Canevin in season-opening loss

A 20-2 onslaught in the third quarter proved to be the difference as the Bishop Canevin boys basketball team dropped its season opener to The Neighborhood Academy, 62-31, Sunday.

Syncer Nicholson scored six of his 13 points in that pivotal third quarter for The Neighborhood Academy and Courtney Wallace added five of his 14 in that period.

Bishop Canevin trailed by just four, 24-20, at halftime before the game got away in the third quarter.

Crusaders coach Aaron McGee said turnovers and offensive rebounds proved to be his team’s undoing.

“We didn’t execute well enough in any phase of the game in the second half to give ourselves a chance to win,” said McGee, in his first full season as Bishop Canevin coach.

Kedron Gilmore added 11 points for Neighborhood Academy, which hit seven 3-pointers to just one for the Crusaders. Three of those 3-pointers came in the first quarter for the winners.

Jackson Maddix paced Bishop Canevin with nine points, seven of which came in the first half. Drew Allen added eight points for the Crusaders, who return to action Tuesday, Dec. 3, at Upper St. Clair.
