The Allegheny County Public Works Department announced Monday that work on a $45.8 million project to improve a section of Campbells Run Road in Collier and Robinson townships will begin Monday, March 9.
The West Hills Gazette reported earlier this month that work would get underway sometime next month, but at that point, no specific starting date was available.
The project is the largest ever undertaken by the county Public Works Department and is expected to be completed in 2031. Campbells Run Road was established as a county road in 1907 and is used by an average of 14,646 motorists daily.
The work will include the widening and reconstruction of a 1.63-mile section of Campbells Run Road between McMichael Road and Keiners Lane to add a two-way center turn lane as well as left- and right-turn lanes at major intersections.
The project also includes:
- Realignment of Boyce Road (State Route 3041) and Parkway View Drive to create a new four-way intersection with traffic signals.
- Construction of a sidewalk along Campbells Run Road between Business Center Drive and Penn Center Boulevard.
- Widening of the I-376 West off-ramp (Exit 62) to Campbells Run Road.
Public Works officials say the project will improve traffic flow and safety in this rapidly developing area of the county. More than 50 side streets and driveways between McMichael Road and Keiners Lane create bottlenecks on the existing two-lane road.
The most severe traffic congestion on Campbells Run Road occurs at Boyce Road, where westbound/outbound drivers on Campbells Run Road must wait for breaks in eastbound/inbound traffic to safely turn left onto Boyce Road and ultimately access the I-376 East entrance ramp. Traffic flow in this area is further complicated by the road’s offset intersections with Boyce Road and Parkway View Drive, the traffic signals at the I-376 West off-ramp (Exit 62), and multiple driveway access points.
Campbells Run Road also experiences frequent ponding and drainage issues. Officials said the project will not prevent flooding caused by the adjacent Campbells Run overflowing, but it will increase the roadway’s ability to drain stormwater quickly.
Public Works officials said traffic restrictions will be needed to complete the project.
From March 9 through the end of this year, there will be periodic lane closures between Keiners Lane and McMichael Road. Traffic at those closures will be controlled by flaggers, and drivers should anticipate delays.
During future phases of the project, sections of Campbells Run Road between Keiners Lane and McMichael Road will be closed to westbound/outbound traffic. Also, access to and from Campbells Run Road at Boyce Road, Glass Road, Keiners Lane, Parkway View Drive and Vista Drive will be closed at times, requiring detours. Public Works will announce all new traffic restrictions in advance in press releases and on social media.
Throughout the project, eastbound/inbound travel on Campbells Run Road will always be maintained, and two-way traffic will remain between Boyce Road and the I-376 West off-ramp (Exit 62). All homes, businesses and commercial properties in the area will remain accessible.
Golden Triangle Construction of Findlay is the project’s primary construction contractor.
