Carlynton boys, girls soccer teams prevail in WPIAL action

Both the Carlynton boys and girls soccer teams posted impressive victories Monday.

The Cougar boys improved their record to 5-2 overall and 2-0 in WPIAL Class 1A Section 3 action with a 4-0 victory over Aquinas Academy.

Meanwhile, the Carlynton girls improved to 5-1 overall and 2-1 in Class 1A Section 3 play with a 3-0 blanking of Bishop Canevin.

In the boys game, senior Hamza Alezzo notched a hat trick, with the last goal coming on a bicycle kick, to lead the Cougars, and Connor Hart added another goal.

Mateo Carrasco assisted on two of the Carlynton goals and Austin Naman added one assist.

In the girls matchup, Carlynton had several attacking opportunities early but could not break through before Sophia O’Brien launched a ball behind the Crusader line and Riley Mauro calmly slid it past the Bishop Canevin goalie for a 1-0 Carlynton lead.

The Cougars struck again a few minutes later when Mauro scored her second goal of the game.  This time Gigi Choate started the attack with another pass behind the Crusader defense that Mauro was able to blow past the Bishop Canevin goalie, giving Carlynton a 2-0 lead that stood up through the remainder of the first half.

In the second half, the Cougars picked up where they left off in the first half, displaying solid possession and ball movement.  They sealed the win with a late Choate goal off a corner kick from Bella D’Antonio.

In other girls soccer games involving West Hills area teams, Montour (4-1-1, 2-0-1) battled Bethel Park to a 1-1 draw, and Moon (4-1, 4-0) edged West Allegheny in a pair of Class 3A Section 2 matchups.
