Did You Know: ‘Aura Farming’ is about cultivating confidence in the digital age

As a millennial, I’m part of the generation that witnessed the rise of social networks like Facebook, Myspace and BlackPlanet. Yet, I still find myself Googling new slang just to keep up.

I’ve accepted that I’m no longer considered “hip” — my teenage sons and my knees remind me of that regularly — but I still have a genuine interest in staying connected to current trends. I may not actively participate, but I like to understand what’s new, especially when it comes to popular slang and viral moments.

Like millions of others doom-scrolling through Instagram or Facebook, I recently came across a clip of 11-year-old Rayyan Arkan Dikha, the Indonesian “boat kid” who became a global sensation after a video of him dancing during a traditional boat race went viral. His energetic “aura farming” dance moves at the Pacu Jalur race in Indonesia’s Riau province have been imitated by celebrities worldwide. But it got me wondering  — what exactly is aura farming?

Did you know that “aura farming” is a popular trend among Gen Alpha and Gen Z? It refers to intentionally doing cool, stylish or impressive things — often on social media —  to build up your “aura,” or personal vibe. The idea blends influence from spirituality and pop culture, and it’s taken off on platforms like TikTok and Instagram. Users gain admiration — and what some call “aura points” — by appearing effortlessly magnetic or cool.

Did you know that aura farming isn’t just about what you wear or who you hang out with — it’s about mastering the art of effortless cool. It’s all in the vibe: appearing naturally impressive while making hard things look easy  and never needing to boast about it. Think of someone casually dropping a photo in the latest fashion without drawing attention to the outfit or pulling off a slick move with zero fanfare. That quiet confidence? That’s aura. And for Gen Z and Gen Alpha, it’s the secret currency of clout and validation on social media.

Did you know that while some critics dismiss aura farming as shallow or overly performative, others see it as a path to self-awareness and intentional living — when done authentically? At its core, aura farming is about cultivating a strong, positive presence, both online and in real life. By tuning into how their energy affects themselves and others, people can actually boost their emotional and mental well-being. In fact, many incorporate practices like meditation, visualization or even energy healing into their routines, using them as tools for personal growth and holistic wellness.

And it doesn’t stop there — whole communities have sprung up around the art of aura farming. On platforms like Lemon8 and Reddit, users swap stories, share tips and post tutorials on how to refine their aura and stand out in subtle, meaningful ways. Whether it’s through unique fashion choices, niche hobbies or small yet powerful social gestures, the focus is on authenticity over performance. The ultimate goal? To radiate quiet confidence and create a magnetic presence — both online and off — that feels entirely, and effortlessly, your own.

In a world where chasing clout often feels louder than substance, aura farming offers a quieter, more intentional approach to standing out. It’s not just about curating a perfect image — it’s about cultivating presence, confidence and authenticity in a way that resonates. Whether it’s through mindful practices, effortless style or simply learning to move through the world with grace, aura farming reflects a deeper cultural shift: one where being cool isn’t about trying harder, but about knowing yourself and letting that energy speak for you. And in that sense, the real glow-up might just be internal.
