Did You Know: Steelers were once the Pirates before they became an NFL powerhouse — and a major source of pride

Did you know the Pittsburgh Steelers were founded in 1933 by Art Rooney, making them one of the oldest franchises in the NFL? Back then, they were called the Pittsburgh Pirates — yeah, just like the baseball team, n’at — and struggled for decades before becoming a powerhouse. Through grit, loyalty and a whole lotta Yinzer pride, the team built a culture rooted in hard work and defense, reflecting the steel mills that once defined the city.

Did you know the Steelers’ golden era came in the 1970s, when they won four Super Bowls in six years? Legends like Terry Bradshaw, Franco Harris, Mean Joe Greene and Lynn Swann made the team nearly unstoppable. The “Steel Curtain” defense was so tough, opponents needed a Primanti sandwich just to recover. This era cemented Pittsburgh as a football town where Sundays in the fall are basically sacred.

Did you know Pittsburgh pride continued into the modern era with strong leadership and iconic players? Under Coach Bill Cowher (yeah, Couch Bill Cowher if you’re saying it fast dahn the West Side), the Steelers won Super Bowl XL. Later, under Coach Mike Tomlin, stars like Ben Roethlisberger, Troy Polamalu and Hines Ward kept the black and gold competitive year after year and added another Lombardi to the team’s Super Bowl trophy case following the 2008 season. These guys weren’t just athletes — they were Pittsburgh through and through, tough as nails and loyal to the city.

Did you know many NFL greats have deep ties to Western Pennsylvania? Players like Dan Marino, a Pittsburgh native who starred at the University of Pittsburgh before launching a Hall of Fame career with the Miami Dolphins, and Aaron Donald, a Penn Hills High School and Pitt product who wreaked havoc on offenses throughout the NFL while playing with the St. Louis and Los Angeles Rams, made significant impacts on the sport.

Did you know that current Steelers standout Cam Heyward is a rare Pittsburgh native who has gone on to star for the Steelers? He has embraced the city’s identity and helped shape the team’s culture. Around here, being a Steeler isn’t just about football — it’s about family, community and waving that Terrible Towel like you mean it. So next time you’re watching a game, remember: it’s more than a team — it’s a whole Pittsburgh vibe, jagoff-free and full of heart.
