Eight West Hills high school boys and girls basketball teams received their WPIAL Tournament marching orders Monday.
On the girls side, Bishop Canevin, Our Lady of the Sacred Heart and Sto-Rox earned playoff berths while five area boys teams will experience postseason play in Bishop Canevin, Montour, Moon Area, OLSH and Sto-Rox.
OLSH is the highest – or best – seed among the girls contingent. Playing in Class 3A, the No. 6 seeded Chargers will host No. 11 McGuffey at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 13, at OLSH’s Angela Activities Center.
OLSH enters tournament play with an overall record of 17-5; the Chargers finished 10-4 in Class 3A Section 1.
Bishop Canevin, seeded eighth in the Class 1A tournament, will host No. 9 Eden Christian at 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 16. The winner of that game will meet top-seeded Aquinas Academy.
The Crusaders finished regular-season play 9-11.
Sto-Rox, seeded No. 12 in the Class 3A tournament, will oppose No. 5 Seton-LaSalle in a game set for 6 p.m. Friday, Feb. 13, at South Fayette High School. The Vikings finished regular-season play 8-11 overall and 5-9 in Section 1.
OLSH also is the highest seed among West Hills area boys teams, as the Chargers enter the Class 2A tournament at No. 3 seed behind No. 1 Jeannette and No. 2 Sewickley Academy. OLSH will open tournament play at 7 p.m. Monday at home against the winner of Thursday’s game between No. 14 Bentworth and No. 19 West Greene.
The Chargers, 18-4 overall and riding a 14-game winning streak, earned a share of Section 4 championship this season, giving coach Mike Rodriguez seven section titles since coming to OLSH in the 2008-09 season.
Two other West Hills schools earned the No. 4 seed in their respective bracket in Bishop Canevin (Class 3A) and Moon (Class 5A).
Bishop Canevin will host No. 13 Shadyside Academy at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 17. The Crusaders won their second consecutive section title and are 13-8 overall entering tournament play.
Also in Class 3A, No. 15 seed Sto-Rox (8-14 overall) will battle No. 2 seed Aliquippa at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 17, at South Fayette.
In Class 5A, Moon will host No. 13 Penn-Trafford at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 17. The Tigers compiled an 18-3 overall record during the regular season and went 8-4 in Section 4, good for third place. The section produced the Class 5A bracket’s top seed in Chartiers Valley as well as the No. 2 seed Lincoln Park.
Moon was the only team to beat Chartiers Valley in section play this season.
Also in Class 5A, Montour (8-14 overall) will travel to take on McKeesport at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 12, in one of three Class 5A play-in games. The winner will take on Chartiers Valley.
